I was on the phone the past 2 hours trying to get AT&T to send me a new phone for my Captivate.

I'm on my second Captivate. The first one I bought on release day. It shut off randomly. Went back and exchanged it for a new one since I was within the 30 days. That one began to shut off randomly after my 30 days were up. It didn't shut off as often as my first one but recently I've been getting 3 shut offs a day.

Called AT&T today about getting a replacement. Was on hold for a hour trying to get connected to the warranty department. Was told that they wanted to send me a new battery to make sure the battery wasn't the issue. I said that is unacceptable and explained my situation to them. Took another 45 minutes to convince them that I would like a "new" phone. I don't mind that it is refurbished as long as it looks new with no scratches or wear. My phone was in a case and had a screen protector so it looks brand new. I'll be pissed if I get one that is scratched to pieces. They told me they couldn't promise me anything. Whatever.

They told me I was the first person that had reported this problem which I find hard to believe by just reading this forum I can be sure that I was not the only person who reported this to them.

Hopefully this "new" Captivate will not have any random shut offs and looks new.

Sorry, I just wanted to vent a bit. AT&T and Samsung ruined my night. I was going to watch Netflix on my PS3 but now I have to go to bed for work in the early morning. Damn.

Lol, first person reporting the problem my a---- anyway sorry to hear that. I was reading some threads on XDA yesterday about this very phenomina and some devs are actually starting to believe that it is linked to the GPS issue and its causeing the phone to shut down. If I see it again Ill link the thread, some interesting info there.

The hell? Go get the android development kit, get the DDMS.bat debugger to run and see why the phone powers off. I am positive if you have the debugger running and it powers off, the data logged would be very helpful.

Why complain? Take matters into your own hands, even better the community will help you if you run into any problems. Yes, I know customers should not have to do this, but then again you could always go to an iphone.

Or you could just switch to a different carrier and get a WORKING Android phone that you don't have to tinker with to get it to work.

Both AT&T and Samsung messed up on this.

To the OP, When I called a few weeks ago about not being able to run OTA update and mentioned the GPS problem, AT&T's so called "android specialists" said I was the first one to report a problem with GPS on this phone.
So it's either what they are instructed to say, or AT&T people are incompetent. I tend to think it's the latter.

If this next phone shuts itself off I might just cancel my AT&T service. It'll cost me $290 to cancel though. I'd probably hold off until the next batch of cool Android phones come on the market.

This is just begging for a poll that we can use for when we call AT&T and/or Samsung. Watch for a new thread! :)

You have to be careful about what you say to AT&T. If you tell them that you put a debug piece of code on the phone, they'll void your warranty. The best thing to do in a situation like this is to start printing all the documentation available online and walk into a store with it and spreak directly to a manager. The AT&T forums are full of the same complaints and all the major gadget sites have plenty of articles to backup your statement.

AT&T should of done a better job of evaluating the Captivate and Samsung, they bought into the hype and have ended up with a mess on their hands. Beautiful phone and great specs but the company who makes it is worthless and can't even support a lemonade stand.

You can't be the only one to complain about it, because i was on the phone with them 2 times last week which added up to about 3 hours and 45minutes about the very same problem.... they first had me do a factory reset wich did absolutely nothing but erase all my apps, and they set up a time to call and check on how it went , but of course they never called . I called them that monday and they tried to send me a new battery also but i told them all i would accept was another phone........ i just got my replacement today.

It only happens on mine if I charge it higher than 85%. If I forget and go to 100, I have to drain it down to 85. Isn't it amazing that I would spend $600 on a phone (I have gophone) and expect it to charge all the way without causing problems?

Interesting to know how long it has taken for most complaints to appear? It seems its like 4-6 wks before these symptoms take hold...kinda coincidental considering the 30 day return policy

That's going to do you a whole lot of good. All they'll be able to do at a coorperate is call the same warranty department that you already have. It's luck of the draw on who you talk to. I had to do a warranty for a customer today (because they didn't want to call), and I had to hang up and call back because the person I got was a total ditz. Second time around, simple as pie.

P.S. I work for an at&t COR store.
