Help Kies and computer will not detect android

I recently switched from Apple to Android, and I love the change. I recently got a Samsung Galaxy S2x, and download Kies to put my stuff into the phone. In recent days, the computer and Kies stopped detecting my phone, and will only charge the phone. I've read a lot of forums and tried a ton of ideas, with no results.
Using Windows 7, if that helps.

Have you tried connecting the device to another computer to rule out a hardware malfunction?

i was told by a cell shop that the phone cannot be updated any further
