I've been reading reviews and watching videos but I can't figure out if the G1 switches to landscape when the phone is turned on its side (keyboard not pulled out).

All the videos only show it going in landscape when the keyboard is out. If I'm watching videos or photos, would be great if I could just turn it on its side and the screen would orientate itself like the iPhone.

    Anyone know the answer?

    It has an accelerometer.

Thanks for the reply. I was already aware that it had an accelerometer so I'm not sure that answers the question. Can anyone confirm that it is used to rotate the screen when turned on it side?

Also, if it does do this, is it application specific or will this work for everything (e.g. even the home screen?).

I believe the HTC Touch Diamond has a similar feature but it only works for some applications e.g. photos and web browsing. It does not work with text/email messaging which is an oversight and something I am hoping the G1 has not made the same mistake.

    Thanks.

If the app supports it, then yes. It's contingent on the developer using the accelerometers to detect orientation.

But with the software alredy inside it does not flip automatically... I have read the user manual for this (page 101 for confirm). I hope that someone will develop an application that resolve this, I love the iphone feature that auto-rotate the images in real time when u flip the phone.
