    Thanks for posting this hef.

Bug fixes look promising but I'm also concerned about losing root.

When I next get the chance I'll give it a go and report back.

Guess I can always revert back to rooted goodness if this latest update doesn't allow.

Since this is still 2.1 the old root procedure is still fine.

    Hey

i did the software update via Motorola Software update app via USB. The root seems to stay untouched. I will test now if bugs I found are fixed. Major bugs I found in my Milestone: Alarm-clock does not have priority to wake processor from sleep, thus delay on alarm in the morning from 2 to 15 minutes, flight-mode drains cca 30% of battery during the night, pure .vcf contact sharing. Still looking up for Froyo 2.2 as soon as possible.

So 2.1 "Eliminates accidental starting of music" does it?

Hmm. My Milestone came with 2.1 already installed (I got it only this week) and today I had been listening to music using the standard player with headphones. I stopped (and exited) the music player before putting the phone to sleep, but as I unplugged the headphones the phone started playing through the speaker for no obvious reason.

According to the task manager there was no music playing, nothing to kill. I reopened the player which also thought it was in a stopped state, but music was playing anyhow. Bizarre.

Whatever the bug was that got fixed in 2.1 it certainly hasn't eliminated "accidental starting of music" on my Milestone :-(

this update isn't 2.1, it's merely an update to version 2.1 (it's actually 2.1.2 or something)
    Your problem

Interesting. My phone said it had firmware "2.1-update1", but out of interest I downloaded the update software from the Motorola site and ran it. It said an update was available, so I let it get on with it.

It was a bit traumatic, the software hung after rebooting the phone and timed out. I had to remove the battery to boot it and get the update to resume, eventually reporting success.

After all that the phone still says it has "2.1-update1", I can see no changes at all :-(

Oh well, at least it still works; I'll check whether it still starts playing music when it shouldn't.

Yes that happened because your phone was rooted. It will say there is a update when its rooted. I been there done that and now you know ;)

My phone is not rooted, it's in the same state it was in when it arrived from play.com.

What else would you want to share it with that it already doesnt? Most phones now have bluetooth and can transfer them that way as well.

    Hi,

Just went through the update process so thought I'd share my experience in case it helps anyone out :)

My phone is unlocked UK spec running 2.1 with root. I backed up the SD card but didn't bother with something like a Nandroid backup 'cos I like to live on the edge :D

    - Downloaded Motorola Software Update (MSU), installed and then connected phone
    - MSU checked, found update and then proceeded to install
    - Phone rebooted fine and MSU reported update was successful
    - Checked firmware version on phone and it's now '2.1-update1'
    - Couldn't load 'Milestone Overclock' app as it appeared the MSU update dropped root
    - Used craigcrawford's guide (found here) from Step 9. onwards to flash vulnerable recovery and apply update.zip to regain root
    - Once rooting was complete tried 'Milestone Overclock' again and the module loaded fine and appears to be working

So it looks as though I now have the 2.1 update1 installed and root skipping hand-in-hand through golden fields of corn...erm...or something to that affect.

Will update if any problems crop up or reportedly fixed bugs re-appear.

i dropped the update last night but couldnt get it to re-root so today has been a nightmare of consumer level functionality proportions.
gonna try out that guide you linked to just now. fingers crossed.

update: nope. didnt work. same thing is happening that happened when i tried it before, just getting an error during applying the root update.zip. reboot shows no superuser.apk...

    major beel.

    any ideas?

Are you trying to apply the update.zip before you re-applied the vulnerable recovery? That is most likely your problem ;)

    @hef

The only issue I've had (and it's done it every time I've rooted) when using that guide was when flashing the vulnerable recovery (VR), RSD wouldn't give it a 'PASS' status until I'd unplugged the USB cable from the phone, rebooted and then plugged it back in - this is noted as a known issue at the end of the guide.

But if there's nothing obviously going wrong with the root process, then I would start from scratch by flashing the non-service version of 2.1 (this will wipe the phone), applying 2.1-update1, flash VR then apply update.zip.

Then if that didn't work I'd start again with just 2.1 and then attempt root.

This is just what I would do though, I know very little about this sort of stuff!!!

If you just wait and have some patience, it will pass after a few minutes. Everyone is so impatient... including myself as I used to do the same thing... one day when I was rooting I had left it and went to do something and sure enough when I got back it was showing the status as "Pass". Patience is a virtue!

Actually, you can get the "PASS" status quickly by pressing the d-pad up button again when the phone starts to reboot, so that it boots to the bootloader again.

Have a look at the following video, it shows exactly how long it takes for me to flash the vulnerable recovery. :D vulnerable-recovery.wmv
