Does anyone else think a sticky thread with tips, etc for preparing for the OTA update is in order?

Instructions for backing up contacts, applications, themes, etc...

I assume the update will have much the same effect on my data as discharging a defibrillater (sp?) with the phone sandwiched between the paddles.

Or should I just not worry at all?

I wouldn't worry about it too much. They are supposedly working on a way to do the OTA that doesn't wipe the phone, so everyone should be all good. The backup info can be found in a few threads already.

I was thinking about that earlier, but it doesn't make sense for them to do that. The apps I had on 1.5, even though the same, are different versions with 2.1. I would have then had to delete them, go to market, and redownload them anyway. Perhaps even leaving behind some errant bits and bytes destabilizing the OS. I really think, seeing the functioning beta, that they shouldn't even go OTA. Provide a link with all kinds of warnings about previous data and let those that want it get it.

I would think that any apps with a 2.1 version would show a need for update via the market, if one is available of course.

Yes, possibly. However, my Touchdown is a completely different version. Isn't Spare Parts totally different too? Point being, Verizon can't really vouch for 3rd party apps and the support calls might be just too much. With Market being totally different too I just don't see how they can do the OTA. Maybe the only ones to get the OTA are those that have the leaked 2.1. Wouldn't that be a hoot?

Oh. Thank you for the speedy reply. I really never would have thought to look there. BUt that's because I'm a lot slow.

I imagine they will get calls either way. If you think about it the calls for "All my apps and information is gone" will probably equal the number of calls for "This app doesn't work anymore". Plus Verizon has a long history of telling customers that they are not responsible for 3rd party apps not working on your phone. Which, in the case of Android includes every app except the VVM app.

That is a great point. It then makes sense to not even send 2.1 OTA no matter the version official or not. With a link to their update page there can be big bold letters stating a total wipe is forthcoming. It should be very interesting to watch this rollout.

They will get calls no matter what they do.

Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot- proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning.

THis is starting to look like an over the desk update might be the way to go. And just when I was sure waiting was the right choice.

I personally am not doing anything to get ready for 2.1 and I actually hope it does wipe my phone (other than what's on the SD card). All my contacts and calendar entries are saved to Google, and making me re-download my apps will give me a chance to get rid of all the useless ones I don't use. Half the fun of owning a phone like this is getting it all set up and playing with stuff. If it doesn't wipe my phone, I'll probably do a factory reset wipe anyway just to start fresh and spend hours getting it all set back up.

Yes, for sure. But I wonder if it will be as many as, "Hey, when is 2.1 coming?" I'm also curious if they can send an update notice to visit the website? Like, "Hey loser still on 1.5. A new version of the OS is available..."

I totally agree. I loved the wipe, things are so quick now. But the question for me is, will the official release reset my current 2.1? That I don't want.

    lol @ OTD.....

If you have a gmail account, that information is, of course, completely backed up in your account. The only thing you'd need to reload is your apps, and enter some passwords in.

Also, if you used a program like Better Cut to create custom shortcut images, those will all be gone with an internal phone wipe. I created ALL my custom shortcuts the day of the 2.1 leak and had to redo everything after installing the leak.

ya know, this being a gmail-linked phone screwed me all up.

i put on the leaked 2.1. it linked everything and transferred gmail contacts to my phone. well, i dont need all that on my phone, so i ran a restore from Mybackup. unfortunately, forgot to turn off gmail's sync, so it overrode what i had in gmail. lost some 250 email addresses. sumbitch. so now i feel like a frustrated idiot.

note to all updaters - unsync, THEN restore.

I was thinking of the acronym thread when I first read it, but figured that was dead and buried.
