I'm getting one of these phones today, and i dont know which to pick. The Devour looks cooler, but it only runs Android 1.6, as the Ally runs 2.1. Is that a big difference tho? idk.. this is my first android phone... also, do both phones have good accurate touch screens?

I was messing with the Ally in Best Buy today and I Actually like it. It's smaller than the Devour and has a really nice keyboard. The hard/soft key setup is a tad odd and would take some getting used to if you're used to the setup on other Android devices.

Look at this and see which attributes matter most to you.

i like the feel of the devour but 2.1 is a great benefit over 1.6, many apps from now on will be written for 2.x devices and higher. the Ally has also recently been rooted, enabling overclocking and custom roms. 2.2 will most likely hit the Ally while the Devour will most likely be stuck at 1.6, maybe 2.1 if we're lucky.

And the Ally has an auto-focus camera unlike the Devour. This means you can use that handy barcode scanner.

also google goggles cannot be used on the devour(needs a auto focus camera). a great app that in time will really be useful. i like the build quality of moto devices however. i remember i went thru 4 LG chocolates in about 5 months and ive never had any problems with my old razors or my devour.

What did you end up getting?

This opinion is a bit belated, but I agree with phirefaux - LGs definitely have a reputation for having problems. I had an LG Voyager last and the phone completely started to self-destruct (for lack of better word) after only a little more than a year....the touch screen completely stopped working. On the other hand, Motorola seems to have a pretty solid reputation for building study phones.

The Ally has very similar features to the Moto Droid, but with a 3.2MP camera instead of 5mp and 54 less rows of pixels. Has a better keyboard from what I could feel. The droid has a better GPU. Both are running mostly stock android os 2.1.

the ally would compare with a devour in my mind and not the Droid at all. screen size camera quality stand out. also the droid has the largest developer community for android phones and verizon is still planning updates for this phone, it will be getting 2.2 this summer most likely while the ally is still in danger of being an end of life device(along with the devour) unless sales improve. the processors are a tad different, the droid has the omap texas instruments proc while the devour has a qualcomm, from what ive read the the qualcomm is clocked at a higher mhz but the omap is a more quality chip.

I did the same thing - got an ally 2 days ago. I originally had a devour, but after finding it was stuck at 1.6, I went and switched it for the ally. Ally was nice - great keyboard, but the soft buttons often missed my touches, the notification shade was hard to drag down, and the UI overall was a bit laggy and not very fluid. The screen resolution was also high and bright/crisp, but at the cost of speed - it had trouble playing NES games scaled to fit the screen without choking - whereas my at&t backflip runs it at a solid 30+ fps.

Anyways, I woke up this morning and saw that the devour was rooted. Wow! I went back to vzw again (they know me well by now, haha), and switched the ally again for a devour . Yeah... it's an expensive hobby, but I love my gadgets :D The only thing I miss about the ally is the camera.. the camera on the devour is pretty crappy imo, and doesn't have a focus ring.. but if you have a dire need to use a barcode app, it shouldn't be too hard to crack the phone open and manually adjust the lens. I did this on my iphone 3g (no autofocus) and moved the focal plane to about 3 inches in front of the lens - perfect for reading barcodes with a non autofocus lens.

can't wait to see 2.1 / roms coming to the devour. With root, we should be able to rewrite the recovery partition and start popping our own custom roms in. :D
