Looking For: App to allow texts to US phones while abroad

    Yup pretty simple. While abroad on my old iPod I had an app that allowed me to use WiFi to send texts to cell numbers in the states and create a chat. I am looking for something similar for Android.

    Also if anyone knows of an app that would allow me to access texts while abroad w/o a data network I'd love that.

    The Google Voice app will do this. I used it for two weeks last summer and it worked great when I was connected to WiFi!

    I'd have to agree, google voice would work best. I use it when I call my friend in canada from my cell sometimes.

    Texting is dependent on the phone networks to allow/enable it. I don't know of any wireless phone networks that don't. Be they in the Americas, Africa, Europe, or Asia. So what's wrong with a standard texting app? I use Handcent.

    I fail to see how Google Voice answers this question as that is an input variable and has nothing to do with texting per s

    Problem is Google Voice only understands 'regular' American twang. Not even British English, afaik. Let alone any other kind of accent in English.
    Would be a good test of one's true American roots... :)
    But is useless for non-Americans (95% of the world population!).

    Maybe he means with regards to voice recognition? Either way, your reply made me giggle. I think I'll start texting with a different accent every month.

    It worked in Mexico and Spain? Strange, because AppBrain says "FREE and UNLIMITED text messaging to anyone in the US & Canada"...

    International texting rates. Consider the context of the OP. He specifically mentions texting back to people in the US from abroad.

    Yes, to anyone IN the US & Canada, doesn't care where your from when your using WiFi, which I am and was, only cares where its going. It does work perfectly fine for me.
