    hello all.

i am considering buying the magic, but a few questions, and if some one could help that would be fantastic.
i am looking to buy the device here in japan from DoCoMo, as they are the only ones offering it.

    so the main questions are;

    1) can the gps reciever work without accessing the 3g network for internet service? ie, is there an app that will force it to work as a stand alone gps reciever to work with google maps. ie, no cost.

    2) are there options to set the device to choose from wireless networks using the wifi reciever as opposed to using the internet through the service provider when and if possible??

the way it works here is in japan, i have to subscribe to a service called mopera for all internet related things. so, for my messaging system, it will be an email address that is linked to my phone. in japan thats how messaging works, its all email addresses. there is no sms. anyways, there is a cost for this dependant on how much is written. so both messaging and accessing the net drive up data packets, and thus cost, which i want to avoid. that being the case i will primarly be using my gmail address, and would like it to only send messages through wifi, free, and was just wondering if there were settings or functions to force it to only send messages when connected via wifi, and not to just send the message through the carriers internet access when i press send or something.

if anyone can help with this that would be great. everything else on the device looks fine and what i need.

maybe if someone knows though, how is viewing pdf files on the device? do you have to scroll at all to read from side to side??? that would be very good to know.

ok cool, thank you everyone for the input, MUCH appreciated!!

GPS is a separate radio in the phone ... and can work with data ... However GoogleMaps is data based so you will need a data plan like 3G, or at least Edge to use the GMaps and GPS together...

There are multiple pdf viewers on the market they vary in their display ... just try them out when you get the phone ... to see which you prefer ...

thank you for the response, and that does make very good sense. so essentially im going to have to find an app that has the maps already created much like a third party application. was looking for something similar to the sony psp game navi maplus 2 which maps routes, directions, etc. and the game itself is 1.7gb so something around that size would be great to have. anything like that exist that you know of??

as for the pdf thing, yah my main concern is that if any of the apps out there can FULLY utilize the screen and be at a decent zoom ratio.

    thanks again!!

Hi Cattanachscat & Welcome to AF forums! :D

The Internet add-on from Vodafone basically allows you to use and take advantage of all the features on the phone that require internet. All the functions including Gmail , Google Maps , Android Marketplace , General web browsing etc all require an internet connection to work and this package covers it all. If you don't have a pack you could use these over Wi-Fi instead but ofcourse this means you won't get your Gmail delivered until you are connected to the Internet. So not having a pack is not good if you wanna use these features while Travelling / Mobile.

Just to make you aware vodafone offer 2 kinds of internet , the

    Back Again sadly,

Two points i was wondering if someone could answer. Firstly I'm just wondering on what the call quality on the phone is like with the UK Vodafone network, the second point is about updates. I have read on the internet that Android 1.6 or 2.0 is coming soon, as I'm new to android i was wondering if the HTC magic would be entitled into these new downloads/patch. As i don't want to be buying something thinking that it is when, when it doesn't.
If anyone has a better insight into these matters would much appreciate it.

    Many thanks

    Hello again Cattanachscat :D

I am a HTC Magic user on vodafone and my personal experience is the call quality is very good , Not bad at all. The 1.6 update is being rolled out now , if you purchase the Magic it 1) May come Pre-installed or 2) Most likely you will receive it within the next few days :) One way or another you will get your Donut! 2.0 {Eclair} is currently not out.

Just a HINT aswell , Make sure if your buying from Vodafone to purchase over the phone or over the internet as this gives you 7 days to test it out and if you don;t like it you can return it. If you take out a Contract in-store this 7 day cooling off period does not apply. So this way "you can have your cake & Eat it"! [IMG]

P.S. Sorry for the cheesy joke! :p
