Lose Apps When Booted Without Sd

ive rooted my phone, installed cynanogen 3.2 and partitioned my sd card for apps2sd, the apps appear to be loading onto the sd fine, but to test that i removed my sd card then booted the phone up, all the apps dissapeared from the app list so i figured it was all good, when i put the car back in and booted it back up the apps showed up in the list, but they always force closed? is this common? is this just how it works? or am i doing something wrong here?
