Can you still root after doing the OTA update? I thought the newest OTA update closed the rooting ability.

what does rooting do? does it change the images and layout of your phone? when you do that does it ruin the phones warranty?

No, you would have to install the 2.1 update and that would allow you to root

It basically gives you admin access to the phone (and the ability to screw a lot of stuff up). Yes, technically it voids your warranty.

That being said, rooting isn't a bad thing. Just be sure to read everything before you do it and triple check to make sure you are doing things made for our phone (not the GSM hero).

  9. It doesn't actually change the layouts and whatnot, it just gives you the ability to do so, among other things. To change your layout you need to install a custom rom such as Fresh. That link i posted will give you the full scoop on how to do it, and then search for how to install custom rom's after rooting.
