So, I went to my Vodafone store this morning, to get my Desire only to be told that all Desires had been pulled from the market here in Germany!!!!

The guy had no explanation except to say that it'll be replaced by a phone called the Desire TFT!!

    WTF is that???

    End rant!

Maybe this has something to do with the lack of enough AMOLED screens, as TFT is an (older) screen type.

He had 3 and told me he got the order to send them back so, don't think that's the reason!

He even showed me on his comp that there was a recall!

Maybe you can buy the Desire with the AMOLED screen from other places before it is a thing of the past.

I keep hearing stuff like this... but a recall? I know that they have run out of the normal screens so are having to swap them with LCDs instead.

I don't think HTC would recall remaining units though, they'd simply wait for them to run out.

They are replacing the amoled screens with super lcd screens from sony.

Apparently you can not really tell the difference between them.

    In general LCD will mean:

    %
    Lower contrast
    Worse viewing angles

    +
    More visible in sunlight.

Add to the LCD that there is apparently better battery performance. I think the trade off might be worth it. And for HTC they need to do something rather than continuously losing sales due to the single manufacturer using up stock for it's own products.

    Just found this:

"HTC Introduces SLCD Display Technology To Its Portfolio
New Displays to be integrated into HTC Desire and Nexus One

Taoyuan, TAIWAN – July 26, 2010 – HTC Corporation, a global designer of smartphones, today introduced Super LCD display (SLCD) technology into a variety of HTC phones including the HTC Desire and global Nexus One later this summer. The SLCD display offers an exceptional natural balanced colour, clear contrast, broad viewing angles and improved power efficiency.
“HTC is experiencing high-demand for many of our phones, specifically our phones with 3.7 inch displays. The new SLCD display technology enables us to ramp up our production capabilities quickly to meet the high-demand,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “The SLCD displays provide consumers with a comparable visual experience to HTC’s current 3.7 inch displays with some additional benefits including battery performance.”
SLCD is the latest generation of LCD technology that offers improved performance from earlier LCD panels including approximately five times better power management. SLCDs also offer an enhanced viewing experience with wider viewing angles that are enabled by Sony’s new VSPEC III™ technology.
