Maps Preventing Phone from Sleeping!Support

    I had read this post
and figured I'd download Spare Parts and see how my phone looked.

It showed my phone had been running (not sleeping) for almost all 12 hours since last time unplugged.

So, I methodically plugged away to try to figure out which program I was running that caused the phone not to go into sleep mode and it looks like it's Maps.

I rebooted my phone, plugged in (to reset the since last unplugged timer), turned the phone off for a few minutes a checked the running time and it was normal. I started maps, plugged in, turned it off for a few minutes, then checked the running time and it was pegged at 100%.

I did the process a 2nd time and got the exact same results.

In addition, I think killed Maps using System Panel and that did not fix the issue. The phone still wasn't sleeping.

I wonder if maybe Maps is calling up some other process and it's the other process that's causing the phone not to go to sleep.

Anyone have any ideas? Can anyone else test this as well to confirm or refute? Perhaps this is why some people are getting way better battery life than others? I'm interested to see how my battery does tomorrow.

I'm not expecting a huge jump as I doubt I've run maps ever day, but I guess I'll see what happens.

EDIT: Upon further investigation, it looks likes it might be once I run an app that activates the GPS, the phone no longer sleeps.

I just rebooted and ran Poynt and the phone didn't sleep.

I then disabled the GPS and the phone went to sleep normally.

I then reenabled the GPS and the phone still slept normally.

I then started Poynt again and the phone didn't sleep.

I disabled the GPS and the phone slept.

I reenabled the GPS and the phone slept.

I'd be very surprised if others didn't have the exact same issue.

I'm having the battery issue as well, but I'm not sure it's the GPS on mine. I keep it turned off the majority of the time. Unfortunately I cant confirm anything tonight because by the time I found the other thread (with blk majk's post) I had already drained my phone until it turned off so I could put a full charge on it from dead to 100% with it off. I have been running System Panel, and noticed that it seemed like when my phone was on the processor was more or less pegged, but didnt know about the Spare Parts app to help narrow it down. Hopefully tomorrow I can narrow it down and see if it IS the GPS, or something else causing the issue. As blk Majk said, on his it was Handcent that wasnt playing nice, so maybe it's just a quirk with the X that is causing the issue. Same issue more or less with everyone affected, just different applications. So far it's the only semblance of an answer to the battery issue I've found.

Wow, I see so many posts about poor battery life and I may have found an answer and it's quiet in here.

Am I the only one experiencing this issue again or is having the phone go to sleep not important anyhow?

Is anyone able to confirm this? Unless either whether the phone is sleeping or not doesn't matter much on battery (which I actually think is likely) or it's just my phone experiencing this (certainly possible), this could be a major bug.

I think that it is so quiet because the word "battery" isn't anywhere in the title of your thread. I only stumbled on this thread because you linked to it in another thread (How is the battery life on the Droid X?). :)

That said, I am having battery issues as well. I may be on board with your hypothesis - have to do some testing first.

    Thanks for posting this thread!

im thinking it has something to do with allowing Google to locate you. I recall a pop up box that asked if you wanted this to happen. After doing a factory reset on my phone (working on getting a decent signal, not battery related at the time) i chose NO the second time and im seeing better battery life. My problem is my phone spends most of the day without a signal and shoots its wad looking for one.

The option you are talking about is in settings->privacy. I don't think that's related to what I'm seeing, but I can retest with that off later.

Isn't there someone who could run the same test that I noted in the end of my first post and see if the results are the same.

If so, isn't there a major bug in the X?
