Lately when I have been trying to download applications from the Market; I keep getting "download unsuccessful."

I have not been able to make it work no matter what I do.

    Any suggestions?

Well u could go into your settings and see what permissions u give ur phone. Or u could always reset your phone to factory settings.

If you are using wifi turn it off and try 3G.

I had to read 15-20 threads of bloated opinions and nonsense theories...to finally come across Rockinfigs...THANK YOU for your SHORT, CONCISE and to THE POINT solution!!! It was frustrating not being able to determine what went wrong...it was even more frustrating attempting posted recommendations based on opinion or partially educated guesses ...

which reminded me of the following quote...

(In reference to the deleted posts)

I'm not sure how, or why, this escalated to an argument. rkirkr just meant his thread may contain some extra information you may find useful, in case this fix didn't work perfectly.

I have this problem, and clearing the cache and/or data and then force stopping download manager, market, AppBrain, AppMonster etc has not worked.

I have experienced the problem occassionally before and switching off the wifi, or the 3G connection and switching it back on again has solved the problem, but not this time.

I have seen suggestions it is caused by a problem with SD cards, and earlier today I clicked on an option in AppBrain to sync something and it it copied a load of app stuff to the SD card. Not sure if this is the cause of the problem.

I really don't want to have to do a factory reset and lose all my paid-for apps.

    HELP!

Paid apps are either tied to your Google account (if paid for via the marketplace), otherwise you have a "key" that was emailed to you when you paid for the app outside of the marketplace. Either way, you don't lose them when you reset or even change phones. Once you log into the phone again with your Google account you can download them again for free, or just re-enter the key if that's the method used.

Can this be used to delete the bloat apps?

I've tried this many times and it *does not work* for me!

Once, after a few days, the Market just started working again, and I downloaded several apps from the Market with no problem.

Now, once again, downloading from the Market is not working.

So, really, what't the problem with the Market?

Haven't had any luck with the cache/data clearing, no desire to factory reset and lose data. I'm gonna wait a few days and see if this fixes itself, but it's mighty frustrating because I just accidentally uninstalled the AppBrain Fast Web Installer. I suppose I can't use it at the moment anyway.

EDIT: Whoops. Didn't realize this was a widespread issue at the moment. I suppose I can stop freaking out for now.

Last post was way back in November but in case anyone reads this thread and has tried the suggestions without a full restore of their apps, here is my (positive) experience:

First of all---yes I tried the items suggested here multiple times and in different orders---my issue may be compounded by the fact that I am not using the original SD card.

(skip to the MY WORKAROUND paragraph if you are in a hurry--don't want background story)

I encountered the Download Unsuccessful issue more and more frequently once I replaced my original SD card (wouldn't have replaced it, but it began misbehaving, as did my son's on the same model: Droid X).

Yesterday I lost more and more functions and decided to do a factory reset. Once I entered my google account info, the market went crazy trying to push all my previous apps to my phone (even those I had long ago removed), and it seemed nothing would stop them from being pushed. The humorous thing is that the apps were supposedly being sent to my phone, but each one resulted in the message 'Download Unsuccessful'; the loop could have gone on for hours.

OTHER THINGS I TRIED that may be ENOUGH of a solution for others:
    *uninstalling the android market update
*deleting the cache from the market app
*deleting the data from the market app then re-associating the market app with my google account
    *multiple re-boots
    *multiple factory resets
    *wiped the dalvik cache
    *formatted my sd card
*pulled my sd card THEN tried to download market apps

I (thought I) resolved this by wiping the phone yet again, and NOT re-adding my old account. I made a new google account and thought everything was fine; was happily downloading multiple free apps and setting things up. Then I realized the Google Market associates the first account placed on the phone with the market and all those downloaded apps with that account too. I'd previously spent over 80$ on software and use it and wanted it back.

    MY WORKAROUND:
First of all I downloaded the Opera Mobile app via the built-in browser. That let me download other apks. If this doesn't work for you, be sure your Settings: Applications: Unknown Sources checkbox is CHECKED. From Opera Mobile, I was able to download the AppBrain apk. I wanted to download the Fast Web Installer apk directly too, but the App Brain link took me to the Market software (which we want to stay away from)

SO I USED OPERA TO GO TO: https://market.android.com/ I signed in to the market web site with my google account I had purchased all my apps through. I located Fast Web Installer and grabbed the apk. I went back to AppBrain and activated the Fast Web Installer. Went to the AppBrain website and clicked through the list of apps I remembered (that were free) and chose INSTALL. They were PUSHED to my phone which was slick.

I got to my previously paid apps via that market link: https://market.android.com/ and by doing a text search for the apps I wanted to re-install. Since I was logged in, the 'Purchased' status was visible and I could click the 'Purchased' phrase to re-download my paid for apps. The crappy part is that my troubleshooting took so damn long. But the end solution is not that difficult actually!

The fix unfortunately is to reformat your sd card. What happens is when you update your ROMS or you do an OTA update or for that matter something just goes wonky (yeah I said it) there's a file that disappears from the sd card. There's prolly an easy way to replace it, but this has happened to me twice now and each time I reformatted the sd card, it's fixed it. This is a guaranteed fix. For me...hope it helps.

I've been pouring over the various threads regarding this issue and am stunned by the incompetence of the internet. All this blah blah about clearing this or that cache and reformatting this or that sd card are nonsense. Want to know why? Because this can happen to two entirely different devices on your google account AT THE SAME TIME. My tablet and my phone (different carriers, same google account) both came down with this affliction simultaneously last night, so obviously it has nothing to do with all of these local fixes everyone is spewing. End of rant. Let's get this right, people.
