I have been trying to figure out how to put contacts into different groups on my Moment. i.e. family, friends, works groups. Is this possible?

It's baffling to me that this feature on the phone has nothing to do with the groups feature on the web contact page. Organizations stays on the phone and groups stay on the web.

I think the original question was how to add contacts to different groups, such as family, friends, work etc. Adding a contact to an organization really does nothing useful. You can't search or display by organizations, unless I'm missing something here.

I find the easiest way to do this is via Gmail on a computer.

Does setting groups in gMail carry over to the phone?

You can view them as groups. Go to your contacts. Menu>Display Options, select the account, and then you can select the groups.
