The first flash of the 2.1 SBF always needs my help to power up. And after I connect the USB again it's finished in 1 second. Makes me wonder if I get a false Finished/PASS status. Is there any way to check this? Any particular properties of the phone to check/look for?

The second flash of the recovery SBF always manage to power up the phone on its own.

And the root update still fails like described in the earlier post.

It doesn't fail. I had the same output as you.

Well - something fails - when I start a terminal and enter "su" I never get it. Titanium Backup reports it cannot get root. And all other apps I have tried also fails. Would flashing a non-service SBF have a greater possibility of working?

I believe you have found your problem. Try a non-service.

I would like to ask- I got Central European Rom with Root and O/C capability, but the physical keyboard has QWERTY instead of QWERTZ layout (it's a German phone). If I change the Rom with Service German one will i loose the root and the O/C capabilities?

You will have to flash the vulnerable recovery and do the root again.

Thanks! It is not going to wipe my data, isn't it?

So long as you don't use a non-service SBF to flash then no. The vulnerable recovery and root don't touch user partitions.

I would recommend backing up anything you need first though. Just in case the service version doesn't work and you end up needing to flash a non-service.

I got it working! :D

But not the way I expected. Flashing 2.1 UK non-service and then recovery and finally update.zip did not help either. But fiddling with Titanium Backup it suggested updating the busybox for me. I let it - and voila I had root in both Titanium and the Terminal apps.

Thank you again for this excellent HOWTO.

After rooting it and installing milestone overclock APK the phone is amazing!
I also installed SETCPU for better scaling.

Problem though:

Now the battery meter has stopped working. It was stuck at 100% for a long time so I rebooted the phone and it dropped to 90%. Now it is stuck at 90% and reboots don't do anything.

Should I do a hard reset?

I have a question. I'm on step 10. "copy the milestone_root.zip file over and rename it to update.zip." But I don't see this file. I downloaded it and unzipped it and it gave me a "META-INF" and "system" files I believe. Is one of these the file you are speaking of or am I way off. Thanks for any help.

You don't unzip it. You copy the milestone_root.zip over to the SD card and rename it...
