Mobile Network Settings

I have a Tracfone ZTE Valet phone. Was just wondering if anyone could explain the following settings and/or make recommendations?

Data enabled.
Data roaming.
Always-on mobile data
System Select (Change the CDMS roaming mode: Home only versus Automatic)

Tracfone doesn't charge extra for roaming, so I assume the setting doesn't matter. I use the power bar widget to control wifi, data, bluetooth and other settings. You save battery power if you turn these things off when you don't need them.
You can get remarkable standby battery life if you do this and use something like battery doctor to shut down all running apps.
