I started posting my findings on the Battery Quirk thread but thought this needed its own thread as I saw more folks saying they have the same issue. This is not a Battery Life post. This is in reference to Spare Parts showing my Awake time to be above 90% and my phone dying in under 4 hours.

I have applied the same fix that worked in the Hero (former hero owner here) to see if it made a difference. So far, here are my findings.

7:30PM - Cut phone on, looked at the home screen then put it to sleep.
7:50PM - Woke phone up and checked Spareparts. Awake time under 10%.
Sent and recieved 1 sms message and put phone back to sleep.
8:10PM - Woke phone up and checked Spareparts. Awake time above 50%.
    Put phone to sleep.
8:30PM - Woke phone up and checked Spareparts. Awake time at 65%.

Installed Handcent SMS app. Cut phone off.

8:40PM - Cut phone on, looked at home screen then put it to sleep.
9:00PM - Woke phone up and checked Spareparts. Awake time under 10%.
Sent and recieved 1 SMS message using Handcent as the default
and put phone back to sleep.
9:20PM - Woke phone up and checked Spareparts. Awake time at 12%.
    Put phone to sleep.
9:40PM - Woke phone up and checked Spareparts. Awake time 15%. Made a phone call.
10:30PM - Woke phone up and checked Spareparts. Awake time 25%. Put phone to sleep.

I am wondering if the stock SMS app can trigger the dialer to lock the phone in awake mode like it was doing on the Hero. My tests prior to making a call seem to confirm that but it is VERY early in my testing to make any determination. I just wanted to throw this out as a possible cause for some of us. I realize not everyone is seeing this but not everyone is looking at Awake time as it requires a third party app on the Moment.

I have background data off, gps off, wifi off, bluetooth off. I have 3 homescreens and the only additional apps I run are PandaHome and Advanced Task Manager (paid).

My wife has a Moment with the exact same apps and does not have this issue. I almost think it is some sequence of events that I normally do that is triggering the issue or vice-versa.

I will keep posting as I test different scenarios on my phone and welcome any input from those who are also searching for a fix for this issue. I also do not claim to be any kind of Android Ninja so if any of the more technical folks out there see some flaw in my logic, please point it out.

I have noticed than often my Moment doesn't sleep. I can' find out why. Today the phone got real hot while not using it. Per Spare Parts, screen on 2.3%, awake 100% of the time.

Took my phone off the charger today, made 1 call of about 3 mins and put it to sleep. An hour later, I checked spare parts and the awake time was 100%.

I rebooted the phone and it appears to be sleeping now. I am at a loss at this point as to why this phone will not sleep properly.

*** After a reboot, my phone seems to sleep now. I will make a call to see of that causes it not to sleep. It seems that a power cycle after taking it off the charger resolves the issue. Will have to test it a bit more.

After rebooting mine it is sleeping as it should be too. I hope we can catch on to what is causing this. The Hero had a similar problem in that it wouldn't sleep properly sometime. I wonder if the other Androids are doing the same. Maybe this is a systemic glitch and not a multiple phone model glitch. The system is pretty young so it wouldn't surprise me. It is a cool system but young.

I think i finally got my Moment to cooperate. I searched other forums to see what other people are doing about their Androids staying awake. What I found is: by turning off the Settings > Data Synchronization > Background Data, the phone now functions well. The main program that doesn't like this is the Market. When opening the Market, it will ask you to turn the background data back on. Just remember to turn it off later after finishing the use of the Market. Also, Background Data will need to be on if you want the Gmail, Calendar, Contacts continuously sync'ed. However, you could just turn it on only when you feel you need the sync and Market functions.

The values that I am now seeing in Spare Parts > Battery History are: 5.4% running, 4.4% screen on. Not too shabby considering I was previously getting 100% running, 8% screen on.

I haven't tried it in a no signal environment with the phone in airplane mode. I will post those results later.

that seems a little overboard to me to completely disable background data.

I have background data turned on and normally get 15-25% running which seems pretty accurate based on my usage.

Seems like you would be better off finding out what application was constantly running and using data causing your phone not to sleep.

This happened to us on the 2nd day we had the phone. After a full charge the battery lasted about 8 hours with about 30 minutes of texting and web surfing use, GPS off, WiFi off, etc. Based on the battery quirk thread we let it drain all the way down and the recharged it and it seems to be working fine now. I'm convinced that something was chewing up the CPU that 2nd day, but we didn't have Spare Parts at the time to confirm that. It seems like the restart (caused by the full drain) "fixed" the issue.

My question is, what app caused it? Is it the stock SMS?

Because of all this, I DLed Spare Parts. Where are you seeing "sleep time"??? Are we assuming "running time" is "awake time" and the rest of the time is sleeping?

Also, I am wondering if Taskillers are what is causing all of this 100% wake time. It seems that everyone that is having this problem is using a taskiller which might be hunting tasks 100% of the time. I used a taskiller on my hero because the damn thing needed it. I have not felt the need for it on this phone as it is snappy as can be without it. I would recommend to most to nix the taskillers. I don't think they are needed on this phone. I know most of us are control freaks(or else we would have an iPhone) so it is hard to do away with the taskillers.

BTW, my "running time" is 15% with a "screen on" time of 14%. And I use the sh** out of my phone.

Are there no programs that calculate CPU time? Like windows(not mobile) task manager does.

I downloaded Toggle and was shocked at the number of programs that stayed open in the background and the services was even more insane but like flyjbaker said, I didn't notice degraded performance from it so I'm not worrying about it.

I don't have any utilities anymore. The only one I tried was Toggle and it took so long for the main screen to pop up I figured it was faster to just go into the control panel than wait for the screen with 8 buttons to come up for 'shortcuts' to WiFi and Bluetooth.

I use a very effective battery widget that allows you to turn wifi/BT/GPS on or off simply by pressing the widget. It also displays battery life when it is "inactive". I also used the toggle apps(curvefish I believe) and like you said, they took forever to affect your selection and I honestly think they were doing something to screw with my phone(ie saying GPS was off when in the settings it was actually on....and me not being able to use google maps or Nav.) SO I uninstalled them and the GPS has worked much better since. The only "toggle" app I use is for airplane mode and it seems to work very well. I live on airplanes so this is a must for me.

Those numbers sound good to me.

When "Running" time = "Screen On" time, the phone is sleeping as it should. Even 100% Running & 100% Screen On would be fine for a phone junkie.

My phone would be fine with a 13/12 and then for some reason it jumps to 100/12 and the phone got real hot. Now that I turned off the Background Data, the phone is running cold and it seems to use a lot less power. It would be great if there was a program that would report which programs are preventing the phone from sleeping. This would not be a Moment specific program because the other phone models are going through the same thing.

I use Task Killer, and it includes itself on the list of checked apps to kill. So every time I use it, it dies too.

Just bc you use it and it says its Killed isnt always the case. On the Hero when using Adv Task Killer it was running the hole time in background even after you kill it.

But....how do you get the phone to sleep? Is that when you press the END key?

Think so. Which brings a question: Do those of you with battery issues hit End when you're done with the phone, or let it time out?

    I always hit End.

Edit: going to get spare parts to see what my uptime is.

Edit again: Under Battery history (other)-

    Since last unplugged
    Running (5.6%)
    Screen on (3.3%)
    Phone on (.9%)

Well, I though I had it figured out after my little reboot event yesterday but today, after the same steps, my phone is pegged at 99.3% awake after 2.5 hrs off the charger and 4 reboots. I am managing to get 10hrs on a charge now so I am wondering what kind of life I could get if the phone would actually sleep.

As mentioned by above, it would be great to have a tool that shows apps that have sleep locks on the phone. Does anyone know of such an app?

I am not certain now if it is something I have installed that is triggering this or a native Android App or system process that is doing it. Every time I think I have it figured out, it starts again.

I'm gonna try the background date fixed mention above and report back later. It is 5PM here, my phone is at 99.3% awake. I just cut background data off and put my phone to sleep. I'll let it sit for an hour and check the awake time again.

While playing around in spare parts, I came across "End Button Function", which lets you set what pushing End does. Verify yours is set to 'Go to Sleep' and then make sure you hit end when you're done using the phone... should help.

Speaking of WiFi being active, anyone noticed it having to reconnect after sitting there on standby?

I bring mine back up and it is using 3G and then reconnects to WiFi in a few seconds.

You will have to restart the phone or hook it up to a charger and then remove it so you can get fresh numbers in Spare Parts. (You probably already knew that. Just covering the bases.)

I have changed a lot of things in the week I have had this phone, but my awake time is low now. The first two days the phone was burning up in my pocket.

These are the biggest things I can think of that have effected my battery/sleep time.

    Replaced default messaging with handcent.
Disabled finding my location based on wireless networks.
Stopped using the channel app(this was constantly running, always trying to find location).

My only widgets right now are the following:
    Sportstap
    Weather Widget
    Battery Widget
    Google Search.

When I open up Adv Task Manager I have the following running normally:
    Voice Control.X
    Touch Input[Hero Keyboard]X
    com.samsung.internalX
    carrieriq.iqagentX
    VoicemailX
    SportstapX
    Weather WidgetsX
    Calendar
    Alarm ClockX
    Moxier Mail
    Settings
    Battery GraphX
    Adv Task Manager

Everything with an X after it I exclude from kill all.

I use WiFi and GPS but I do not leave them on unless I am using them[Control with Battery Widget]

Hopefully this might help you eliminate some things. But if you have over 90% awake time I would have to believe it was some app constantly accessing the network or your location.

Hey could you do me a favor and take adv task killer off and tell me how your life is? My buddy did it and did many others so far and found there battery life doubled.

I am using adv task manager not adv task killler, seperate programs and i kill adv task manager everytime after i use it. and with adv task manager when you kill it, it does not restart, I have check this with other task managing programs to verify it is not running in the background.

My battery life is fine. It last all day, everyday for me. My meter is still a little off, but I can't stay up late enough to do a full drain anymore, last time it took me until 3:30am to drain it and I was punishing it for like 3 hours to drain the battery.

With Advanced Task Killer installed I just managed a 36 hour battery run.

    It's not Task Killer.

    I've got a

    com.verisign.xms:xmsservice

...anyone know what that is. It's in yellow in task killer, and doesn't go away with a kill all. Force kill and it goes away...
