So as many of you may know, I've been lurking for a few weeks now, trying to decide if I should go for the Moment as my next phone. My primary concern has really boiled down to software upgrades. With at least an offically announced commitment to get 2.0 to the Hero and the only rumors I see regarding the Moment put that same upgrade in Q2'10 if at all, the only sure path for a software upgrade is if someone finally figures out how to root the Moment... which has me a little worried.

I've been poking around several forums now, and there just doesn't seem like there's anyone knowledgeable who's really putting effort forth to root this thing. If I had more knowledge, I'd be hard at work at it myself, but unfortunately I don't. Maybe there's some forum out there where people are really trying and getting somewhere, but I'm not seeing it. So I gotta ask, how confident does anyone here (one of the most active Moment forums I've found, btw) feel that anyone's going to find a way to gain root access? I haven't seen anything to make me hold my breath... most threads discussing it only have a few posts. I'm really hoping I'm missing something... does anyone here have more faith than I do? Is there a site I'm missing where there's a huge community sharing findings and information?

Ultimately I'll most likely end up getting this phone regardless... but if nothing happens in my 30 day period... I might be tempted to switch to the Hero. With root access and their software update today... the software support it's getting might outweigh inferior hardware. Still not sure.

The Sprint Hero was released October 11th and wasn't rooted until 11-07-09. That's almost a month after its release date. The moment, as of this moment..., has only been out for about two weeks. Give it a few more weeks, if you don't like the results you see, you have your answer.

Definitely a fair answer. I've just been through a few HTC WM devices, and I guess I'm used to a very quick and comprehensive dev community reaction to any new device and efforts to get it unlocked. Switching to a less community-supported device, no matter how much better it is (and I definitely think it is) is just making me antsy!
