i have recently purchased an EVO, and have heard of the somewhat poor battery life. i would hate to limit my capabilities by reducing the functionality of the phone, so i was looking towards some method of getting more power to the phone. i just cant find a definitive answer as to what option i should choose. here is what i have considered, along with my likes and concerns for each:

    1.get a high capacity battery.
pros: much more talk time without having to clunk around a charger of some sort. also the replacement cover for the battery i was looking at (seidio 3500) in a small way protects the camera, but no more than a decent case would.

cons: according to batteryboss, the rated amount of the battery could be a bit lower than advertised, but even this is not my greatest concern. the biggest drawback to me is i have yet to hear of any case you could put around the phone with the extended battery, meaning i would have to leave the evo plain for the most part, save a screen protector.

    2. get a charger.
what i mean by this is like one of the chargers that itself has a battery and is used to charge the device if away from a power source.

pros: this would be quite useful in the fact i would be able to put any case i wanted on the phone, and would only need to plug this thing in when i ran low, allowing me to breeze through the day. i was looking at something like the IMP880 or IMP1000, which has a crazy high Mah (11000). this means less time looking for an outlet more time enjoying my phone.

cons: this option would mean i would have to carry this charger in addition to my phone, and for the most part i am not too far from an outlet, this just gives me the option to have it close or charge while out in the woods. it would be rediculous looking if i tried to hold the phone with this thing charging the phone up to my ear, making it slightly inconvenient. i would also have to take note that this charger's battery might not be up to its full Mah, but not a big concern at 11000, unless its only half that, which i doubt.

    3. buy an additional battery

pros: this allows me to just carry a spare battery around and when i need it just pop one out put the other in. it adds no bulk to the back of the phone, again allowing me to pick the case of my choice. i have no doubt 2 batteries would get me through the day.

cons: depending on the case i get, this can be a slight inconvenience or a very annoying task during my day. i for some reason like the bulkier yet more protective cases, which means i would have to strip this thing down often to swap the battery out. i would also have to buy a battery charger for the other battery when not in use so i don't have to swap between batteries to charge them.

so my main questions are these:

1.if you have an evo, and don't really restrict the usage, how long does it last? if it lasts a good deal of the day, i might not bother with any of them. if it lasts for less than 6 hours, i will most likely not do the 2 battery option.

    2. has anyone heard of a case that will fit the extended battery cover?

    3. if you had to choose between bigger battery and not having a case or having a case and getting an external charger, which would you choose?

if you can think of any other battery option (besides turning everything off in the phone), please let me know. i really want to enjoy this phone for a while, and it would hurt the experience to not be able to use it for very long at a time without charging.

    thank you in advance!!!!

Root your phone and install setcpu. Before rooting my evo, I would NEVER get more than 24 hours battery life, even when barely using the phone. After rooting and setting up setcpu, I can EASILY go 2-3 days with normal usage.

I'm interested in rooting for things like SetCPU, not the custom roms, that's doable, right?

    battery <20% - priority 87 - 245 max 245 min
    batt <25% - pri 85 - 460 max 245 min
    batt <50% - pri 80 - 652 max
    batt < 75% - pri 40 - 768 max

interesting thought. i was considering doing that (rooting) anyway, and setcpu seems quite useful. how much load do you normally put on your evo on a daily basis? i figure my usage will be quite heavy.

I would say average, about 30 mins of calling, probably 100 texts, and maybe a half hour combined of web/facebook/twitter usage per day.

i figure until the "newness" wears off i will use about the same as you except for the web, which i will probably use it for an hour or 2. maybe less texts. does the settings you provide show any noticeable speed difference, slower or faster?

you will have to forgive me on this one, as i am new to droid terms and setcpu. what i am getting from your post is this:

min and max is the processor speed in mhz
screen on is basically while in use
screen off is when not in use
under 15 percent is to conserve the battery when it is low.

i know this sounds really clear to you and as i type it, it makes sense to me. i just want to be sure im not misinterpreting things so if i want to tweak them later i dont screw stuff up.

also, how much battery life do you get out of your android with those settings using the stock battery?

I use my phone for 9+ hours a day. After playing with several settings including setpcu I gave in and bought the sprint extended battery. Absolutely love it. My first charge gave me 16 hrs with 9+ hours of heavy usage. We have been camping since friday and time on the charger has been limited.

Extended battery cases will start rolling out soon. Supposedly sprint will have one out by the end of the month. You might consider root, playing with the settings , and waiting to see what comes out between now and xmas.

I thought about an external 8500 mah that could power multiple items like my sons nintendo ds, the girlies iphone and my phone. For$ 50 it wasn't bad and everywher I have had the phone die I had something I could have stored it in. The issue I have is impatience. I don't want to wait on it to charge the phone up. I bought the extended and carry my old battery as a spare. Haven't needed that spare once this weekend.

didn't even think of looking at sprints site! is this the one you are talking about? Sprint - All Accessories

where did you see they were making a case for it? also do you know if it will be a silicone case/hard case/ or just like a pouch? I am not the biggest fan of pouches, just personal preference(picky).

just got my evo in the mail. should be activated at about 2 central time. i am thinking i will root and get a portable power source until they make a silicone case for the extended battery. im not too fond of cutting up a stock case just to make the back fit. found another extended battery though for 25. might get both lol.

the htc pouch offered by sprint fits it nicely but someone in a thread here reported they work for best buy and that the sprint rep said a case would be out soon

Welcome to the wonderful world of Evo!

I just ordered the Seidio Innocell 3500 with the replacement backing for it. After reading the crapload of awesome reviews on Amazon I'm pretty confident that it'll make me happy.

Seidio will be releasing a Rugged Case for their extended battery cover this year. You could wait for that, and then you can go with a high capacity battery and know that there is a case for it.

Can you get by on the stock battery until then?

i should be able too. i also bought the yoobao extended battery (3000 mah). i could just get the seidio extended battery cover and case later correct? if i remember correctly the yoobao was slightly smaller so you could put it under the seidio cover but the seidio battery would not fit under the yoobao cover.

oh forgot to mention. i cant root my phone yet (something to do with the build number being 3.3...). i get roughly 15 hours of life out of the battery at current (4 hours actual usage),but that is with everything shut off. i want at least 6 to 8 actual, could care less about standby, as with my current settings i lose 20% max from 11 hours of use. i just feel very restricted with what i can do. gaming as of now is a no-go and i have to turn the mobile service and manually check my email. i already bought setcpu, but of course cannot use it until rooted.

found it. can you put the yoobao extended battery under this (using the innocase cover instead of the yoobao one, of course). cant afford 100 bucks for another case/battery....

I'm sure it'll fit, but it might be a tiny bit loose, as it's slightly smaller. Maybe find something to fill that space that won't catch fire?

i think the difference might be about a millimeter. if it wiggled that much i wouldnt think the battery would disconnect unless i dropped it. i actually got my evo rooted enough to use setcpu. i get all the settings except for priority. what would i want to set it at based on things like screen off and under 15 percent. i see most set it higher, but i am curious as to what it is for exactly.
