I've had the Moto Droid for three days now and it reboots itself or freezes frequently. It does this at least 10 times a day.

First thought: apps conflicting, right? But this was happening with no apps on it at all. It happens in the music player, home screen, and just about anywhere. There is no pattern to it.

My final assumption is that this is a problem with Android 2.0 and patches and updates will be coming to minimize these freeze ups and reboots, but wanted to pop in an ask the community if they've been seeing the same thing, or if they have any tips/tricks to stop these.

There a quite a few people affected by this. The fix so far is to return it and get another phone.

Have Verizon replace it? Wow! I didn't expect to hear that response but I'm kind of glad in a way. I'd much rather have Verizon replace the phone than know it's a universal issue with the OS.

    Thanks!

Yes take it back. That is not normal. Mine has been on continually since last Friday and no reboots.

I took mine back. The manager ask if I would remove all programs added and see if that changed anything. I did. During a 4 hour period it rebooted twice. I took it back in and he replaced it with a new one. Took about 15 minutes. All of your contacts and settings are backed up through google. Not sure I like that but proved useful. The new one seems fine so far.

I had a similar problem, but only when I connected to a USB port. Deleting all apps did not solve the problem. A hard reset did solve the problem. So there is a difference between deleting apps and a hard-reset -- perhaps some left-over crap from apps. Perhaps

a hard-reset will solve the reboot issue you have?

Take it back. My first one started to reboot more frequently after a week. Did a hard reset, helped for a couple days but got worse. Mine was a 40/9 build. Took it back for another one which was another 40/9 build. This one was horrible. Reset 10times in 3hrs, locked up, the works.

Took that one back, got one that was build 39/09 and it's been flawless. And my gf says my calls come out clear now.

Yeah, I had to exchange mine twice too.

Looks like the 3rd phone might be a charm though...

    Working nicely now.

I've had mine for 3 days and I have a problem with it rebooting when I select the notification bar and try to drag it down. The unit shuts down and does a soft reboot. It has also frozen on a couple of occasions and I had to remove the battery. Went to Verizon tonight and they weren't sure. Advised me to remove the battery and reset it. This is not a good answer!

I picked a Droid the 1st day and ran into the reboot issue. The Droid wouldn't stay on for more than 4-8 hours at a time would freeze up. I tried the factory reset and other suggested tricks without success then finally took it in for a new one. The new Droid has been working great without any issues. I've noticed that the battery life has been significantly improved with this new unit.

If you're having the reboot problem return the unit and get a new one.

This one, and I think there's another piece of software being discussed that does this after your first reboot. You don't have to reboot for this software, but it causes constant reboots the first time you do. Wish I could remember the name of it.

definitely return your phone if you're having this problem. i had a droid that was freezing and rebooting a lot. i had to do about 10 battery pulls in the first few days i had it. i took it back to best buy and exchanged it for a new one and this one has been running fine. you shouldn't have to deal with this.

when the droid i got on the first day rebooted frequently I went back to Verizon a month ago and got a replacement. the second droid does the same. Maybe three times a day. It has happened even in the middle of a call. Unless i am very unlucky i think it must be a systemic problem, either phone design or software. I think Verizon and Motorola should get on this before they find themselves to be the new Toyota. Motorola rising from the ashes only to sink back...

Mine has done a spontaneous reboot a handful of times since I got it in Nov. Not very much. But mine has lately been shutting down/freezing for no apparent reason. It'll just be sitting there doing nothing. I pick it up, hit the power button & I get no response. Have to pull the battery. I've got a replacement coming now.

Mine started doing it when I installed the 2.1 launcher. It runs much slower and reboots frequently. I'm hoping that if the official 2.1 ever comes out it'll fix it.

Backup your apps with Astro, and try a factory reset. I've done factory resets a couple times and both times (about a month between) it went flawlessly, all apps/contacts/... reapeared. I backed up just in case, but it ended up not being necessary.

I attributed the reboots to apps I installed/uninstalled. Just my hunch.

ok, If anyone wants a solution that doesnt involve taking the phone back, i have a simple and easy one. Basically you should wipe the hard drive, and start from scratch. YES YOU WILL LOSE ALL PRIOR SETTINGS AND APPS. BUT!!!!! your contacts will still be there, and setting up gmail and reactivating is simple as pie. To reboot the phone, power off your droid. Then, slide the keyboard open, hold x and simultaneously turn on the phone. A screen with a triangle will appear, when this screen appears, hold the up button on the volume switch, and the camera button in unison. then the phones boot menu will appear. use the pad on the keyboard to navigate. select wipe hard drive, then reboot. and your phone will work fine!!! u just need to re download any apps!!

also to mhome, i believe my droid was glitching due to a faulty application opening when the phone booted, causing the phone to reboot. but if anyone is too lazy to re add apps (i shoulda have done it) use astro like mhome

I had this same problem. My droid rebooted shortly after booting. It was a horrible cycle and the 3 seconds I had between start and shutdown were not enough to do anything. Before resetting the phone, I decided to trouble shoot. This might be useful to others:

I noticed the reboots came just as the phone finished loading it's 3g and/or cellular signal, or the sd card (both events occurred close together).

On the theory that the reboots were caused by an app using my 3g/cellular connection, I
put the phone into airplane mode as soon as it booted. This stopped the reboots!

I was then free to remove the app I suspected
. After removing the app, I turned airplane mode off, and launched another app that used the connection and...my phone rebooted. But since that, everything has been ok.

My wife's droid recently stopped using her ring tones. They were still on the phone but it would reset them to the default ring tones. Then her phone would die unexpectedly showing that the battery was suddenly drained. It would reset a couple times a day. Today it REALLY started acting up shutting off in the middle of phone calls, making calls on it's own and saying that she had the rings on silent but her settings said otherwise. We called Verizon and did a soft reboot, hard reboot, reset to factory settings and it was great for about 20 min. Then it got worse than before telling her it had 60% battery and suddenly going dead, she plugged it in and it automatically said she had 60% battery life again. This is her second droid because her first one wouldn't connect to the dock. We called Verizon again and they are replacing the phone, should be here Monday. I think I'm gonna try the hard disc wipe first though.
