Help MXiii 4k AV using AV output port

I just got an MXiii 4k and I would like to use the AV output port to connect to a DVD recorder and record what I watch/stream. The box came with a cable (3.5m phone plug to box and RCA red,white,yellow plugs to DVD or TV composite connector). However when I use the cable and connect either to my dvd recorder or to my Sony tv, I get no signal from the MXiii. I'm not sure if the cable is bad(seems to test okay) or the box port isn't working. Has anyone used the AV port on this box or any of these android tv boxes to connect to a TV or DVD. Is there any configuration or utility you need to use to make the AV port operational. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
