I thought it would pull my facebook friends and put them in my address book. Is this not the case?

Yes. The phone does not sync with facebook as far as adding/removing contacts. It only links already existing contacts to Facebook.

Phone contacts are for the phone only and will not sync with your Gmail account.

Google contacts will sync with Gmail or are contacts that were pulled from Gmail during a sync.

Right, but that is not putting them into the phone's already existing address book. I don't believe that's possible, is it?

That it is. Didn't even realize you could do that, myself. :)
