My first android phone ever, and I am stuck need help

I had not bought a phone since I bought the very first iphone on the very first weekend. Finally my iphone broke where the screen didn't work and I decided to get a new phone. One thing I knew is that I was NEVER EVER going to buy another iphone again as I hated not having flash all this time.

Ok, it seems that everywhere I look at apps they are saying I have to have root. Whether I am looking at screencapture software, backup software, you name it, everything says I have to have root.

Well I understand the concept of root from playing around with my websites, but other than that I am lost.

I bought a very cheap $99 t-mobile concord (Brcm zte v768). It seems that everywhere I go, everyone mentions coming to either this site or one other site out there, but nowhere can I find the info I need.

Is there a simple thread somewhere that will give me the download link to the software for my phone and what I need to do?

I'm not kidding when I say that I have been on google for the better part of 7 hours now and I am no further along than when I started.

Please Obi Wan... your my only hope :)

Actually if your phone already has flash then you're fine, and ones with older OS versions should still have it. You just won't get it in newest ones.

We do have a Concord forum here, but as you may have found out it's basically empty. Rooting is device-specific, so it will really depend on someone who knows this device reading this thread. Hopefully someone will know, but I'm afraid I don't.

But I will agree with Alice that actually very few apps require root. Screenshot without root is a pain, I'll grant, and really comprehensive backups do require it, but not much else. And there are other backup apps that can back up a lot of stuff without root (MyBackup Pro comes to mind). Maybe if you ask over in the Android Applications forum people will be able to suggest non-root apps for some of the things you want to do?

Thanks for the information. Your right, I went through the Concord forum and there really isn't much information there at all.

I had no idea that rooting a phone was so device specific, but I sure do know now. I just hope that an expert on the Concord will drop by these forums someday and leave some really good and clear instructions on how to root the phone. I bought it because it was so cheap and a good entry into the android world. I'm guessing that with the phone costing under $100 that many people will start using it and will want to learn how to root the phone, so maybe that will become popular enough to make it worth while for the experts to help us out.

not sure if you know, replacing an iphone 3g/3gs glass & digitizer is fairly cheap under $100. 4/4s are much more than that. you can do it yourself with youtube, send off to a website or find a local repair shop.

i just picked up the zte concord on 11-13-12 and ive been looking for a screencapture and f.lux app. i have downloaded screencapture apps that work without root but they are all tethered, which means you need to connect your phone up to your pc every time you reboot.

im still looking for instructions on a successful root but it seems we may be waiting for a while.

im also searching for a way to turn off soft key lights

I dont know if its phone specific, but if I want to do a screen capture I press the power and home button. And on my tablet its volume and power button.

Both of my devices are not rooted.

I would shoot a pm to one of the devs on the forum and see if they have more information for you

Rooting is very phone specific. There will be instructions on how to do it in the forum for your device(assuming there is one)

ive tested every soft key + power and the volume + power with no result.
its almost ironic that its ok for google to see everything on my phone but
yet i cannot make a snapshot of it

so far there is interest in rooting but no one has successful rom.
and im not the type to work on porting. i break, not create things.

what is it you need in rooting? some things (like changing the launcher or theme, and other elements) don't need root. root is only useful if you like overclocking the CPU, flashing custom ROMs (CyanogenMod comes to mind), playing in the build.prop file, or customizing the kernel. a lot of apps can accomplish theme changes, launcher replacements and even disabling things like lock screen or turning the status bar off, or tweaking the status bar without needing root.

    for me 3 things:

    1) turn off softkey lights at night or all together - i use "screen filter" app but it cant control the softkey lights.
    2) screenshots - untethered - of all the screenshot apps, all need root to be untethered.
    3) remove tmobile bloatware to free up more phone memory.

Those key combos only work with Android ICS unfortunately, and also as far as I know you're correct that screen capture either requires root or tethering.

All require either root or a custom rom.

Thats strange because my samsung galaxy s advance is still on gingerbread and I can take screen shots. (going to jelly bean in the next months luckely :p )

Actually those key combos are ROM dependent. All Samsung phones have been able to use the back+home combo for screenshots since Eclair/Froyo, and when TouchWiz 4 came out with the SGSII, this was changed to Home+Power

I have a problem with my concord, this morning when i try to turn it on, make someting weird, the phone do like will turn on, andorid logo shows up, then t-mobile welcome animation, and do not take me to the main page, that t-mobile welcome animation repeats their self over and over again, never ends.
    who can i fix it?
    Thanks for the help.

the first thing to try is to remove the battery completely, then try booting.
if that doesn't help, try removing the battery, sim and sd card and see
if the phone boots up just with battery.

    any drops or water damage?

    welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!

just curious if you did anything prior to this happening? try the battery pull and see if that helps as mentioned by oloung1.

since i do not have this phone, i'm not sure how to get to the bootloader so that you can do a factory reset from there. i'm also not sure if the bootloader has that option or not.

huh weird then. is your phone rooted?

if not then i'm not sure if your bootloader has a factory reset option as does htc phones.. but if you can get to the bootloader then you can try and do a factory reset from there. if not then you might need to take it in to get looked at.
