I've been reading a lot of threads about how upset people are about not getting the 2.1 update yet. After some thinking, and asking around to see how upgrading situations are handled in different environments this is what I came up with...

I think Google and the phone makers are trying to get most of the phones on the same page initially. This can be a long, drawn out process as you all are experiencing right now. Verizon (along with other carriers) are still trying to nail down the OTA situation along with other options if the OTA doesn't work. Once they get this initial process down, I think the updates with come a lot quicker. The 2.1 update will come to the Eris, but it will just take some time. I think once this happens, the updates with fly out without any problems.

It can be aggravating to hear it's coming next month, it's coming next month, but it will eventually come. I do think that after this first update comes out, everything will be a lot smoother.

    ...jus my two cents here.

That's cool and all, and possibly true. But it's been said at least about 20 times already..

    I don't want it.

Oh, wait, that's been said ad infinitum in here, too.

I think after the incredible comes out, the 2.1 update will hit the Eris phones. Then everyone will be on the same page for future updates. Thinking about it, it makes the most sense to do it this way.

  5. wait - maybe this is a non US perspective - but aren't we going to be grabbing OTA updates directly from google over internet?

Hence even if carrier doesn't allow it via 3G, can't you just connect via wifi?
Even my old nokias could update firmware directly from nokia repos on internet via wifi

The problem is that nokia made firmware for devices and distributed them(and had a big hand in the operating system)

Google makes the operating system, and then the device makers make the individual firmware plus possibly UI/extra apps.

It then falls on the device makers to make the firmware updates and make the transistion from one OS version to another possible on the phone, something which they have not been all that good at.

The wait will probably seem less "nightmarish" when users of the leaks find that one or more of the developer geeks around has used the extra time to come up with a reliable way to restore 1.5 to their phones, removing the anxieties over whether or not the OTA will come to a "leaked" device.
