I have to return my Hero back to Sprint for dust again, so I was wondering if I could save the nandroid folder from the SD card, root the new phone, put the old nandroid folder on the new phone, and do a nandroid restore? Is this possible or am I way off? Thanks in advance!

I think it would work...I don't think there's anything that ties the backups directly to the phone.

    Can anyone confirm?

I dont see how. nandroid is an exact copy of your phone as it was when you made the backup (minus anything on the SDcard of course). if you flash it onto another phone, it will be just like your old one. It doesn't change the phones EIN though so you couldn't steal someone elses phone and not have to activate it.

Thanks for the help. I'll try it out and post back here with whether or not it worked.

This was brought up before I believe. You should be able to do it no problems at all.

Also, can a mod move this to Root Area please? :). Thanks.
