need help w/ android 8650 tablet

My daughter bought a Via 8650 tablet and the have a security feature that you can lock the screen using a series of dots that you connect to make a pattern. She has forgotten the pattern she set as her password and now hasn't been able to access her tablet. THere is a "forgot password" feature, but when she does that it goes into "loading" mode for most of the day and goes dead before anything loads. Is there any way around this? Also, we read that there is a program you can download to increase the speed of the tablet, but we can't figure that out either...any suggestions?
