Great news. I'm not sure if its been posted yet but Netflix works on our Optimus V! All you have to do is edit your build.prop to one of the supported phones, reboot and run the app. Works perfectly, FLASH NOT REQUIRED!

It worked on my Nook Color, so I figured what the hell.

I have a video of it running if anyone doesn't buy just the post.

  2. Thanks and a couple questions. What app does this work with? Where is the build.prop file located? Any other steps needed?

I pulled the APK from my Nexus One which is one of the 4 supported phones able to run the legit Netflix app released today...
BUT, I believe the APK is available on XDA.
    As for the Build.prop...
Its located in /system (Yep, a system file so CAUTION!!!)
    Edit with root explorer
    Change the following...

    ro.product.model=Nexus One

a couple spaces down you'll see

    change to

    save and reboot.

Here is the vid of Netflix streaming...

Followed your instructions and when I hit play I get the message "Netflix service is not available on your device" :(

EDIT: For anyone else having this problem, the solution is to uninstall the Netflix app and download it from the market (should be in the market after you edit build.prop)

Make sure there are no errors in your editing and you MUST reboot after editing.

Also check market AFTER you edit. The good App should be there.

This may give me a reason to root
Do I need a custom rom for rooting? (Yes I I'm sure it's in the all things root thread but I'm lazy)

This also may mean that our phones will get official support at some point.

Same here. I've never seen a reason to root before, but now I have big fat red streaming reason to do so. That reason also made me register here. :)

I assume the basic process is:

    1. Backup your phone settings/apps (what's the most efficient way to do this?)

    2. Root the phone

    3. Apply the changes above to the APK and cross your fingers.

Any other complications to keep in mind?

    Thank you all!

I would not recommend editing a system file, especially to those who cannot figure out or are having problems rooting.

Could you let me know the application name and steps you are following to get this to work? How do I access the file to edit it? Hopefully free :)

I can also confirm by following sirrx7's walk though that this is working. I have not had a chance to do it on WIFI yet but it was running just fine with 3g.

    Much thanks!

I agree with you. I looked at this file (build.prop) - you can use ES Explorer to view it if you are rooted - and I wonder what other programs would be affected if this file were edited. If nothing else is affected it might be worth it if Netflix never updates the app to run on other phones but I guess it is wait and see what they do.

Other apps can and will in fact be affected. Swype is the main one. If you use Swype you will encounter problems. Which is why I said to backup the original Build.prop.

This is just a workaround, nothing more.

I don't use Swype so its not a biggie for me but if I encounter something that needs my original build.prop I can always change it back.
Oh yeah, your phone will also be identified as a Nexus One in About Phone.

Also, I agree with lou61166, This workaround can be extremely simple but also extremely dangerous. Anytime you mess around with system files you run the risk of bricking your phone. You MUST know your own limits. If you feel uncomfortable DO NOT DO IT!!!

Thanks for the info. I use Swype all the time so I will hope Netflix broadens their compatible phones.

Crap, I was going to do this but I can't stand to lose my Swype. Guess I'll have to wait...

I use slideIt and like it 10x better than swype but it does cost from the app store. Works fine when you install netflix.

Oh great. That's all we need on this network. People streaming NETFLIX off their mobile phones..

With people using a mobile broadband network like this, MARK MY WORD, this "unlimited data plan" will be capped in a few months all because of usage like this.

Not sure if any of you were previous users of the MC760 Broadband2Go device, but Sprint /VM pretty well put a 2.5gb on that really quick.
It's 5gb is you were already on the plan.

Come on people, a few of you are going to spoil this $25 plan for all of us.

If you wanna watch movies, use your freaking pc.

I agree, or use WIFI to stream to the phone,i really don't have to stream a movie to a 3.5 inch phone.

Everything is going to the cloud and everything is going mobile so the data networks will catch up and compete just like in other countries. Corporations will milk every nickel they can out of consumers but the consumers will flock to where the bandwidth exists. There was the same argument concerning your ISP at home and increased bandwidth usage but that didn't slow anyone down - Netflix and other services spread to DVD players, Blu-Ray players, TV's, media boxes, etc. The real problem is with bit torrents, etc. At least people are paying (at least most are) to view Netflix.

Also I don't know about others but the 3G network around here is not fast enough to watch much of anything. WiFi would be the only option and then I would prefer a larger screen - my eyes are too old.

Having said that you bet I will install the Netflix App when available for my phone. I will probably watch it about as much as I do the other video apps I have (Revision3,, YouTube, etc.) - so far about one hour total in two months.

First days experience having Netflix available:

Went out last night, and had my 8 year old niece with me. Had to wait for a table at a restaurant for about 45 minutes. Normally this would be 5 minutes of good behaviour, then 40 minutes of trying to keep her calmed down. Pulled out the phone, connected to the restaurant's wifi network, opened her favorite show in Netflix, and I was able to discuss business matters uninterrupted all the way through our meal. ;)

    Hurray for television babysitters!

Anyone had a problem with the amazon app store after changing their build.prop?
  22. sirrx7

    sirrx7 Well-Known Member

I've used the Amazon store with no problems using my Optimus v, and nook color. As a matter of fact I'm using today's fee app of the day to type this on my nook color right now.

Odd, as soon as I went back to my old build.prop the app store was back on my phone.

Foursquare and Authenticator both vanished when I changed my build.prop and came back when I restored my old build.prop.

doesnt work for me...and i followed the instructions, and even triple checked them

edit: download the app from android market and it works! although i do have a nasty green bar on the top of the screen now, and the color is off (kinda like watching a 3d movie without the glasses). anyone else with this issue?

Are you running stagefright? Some people say that can cause the green bar at the top.
