Never had Android before, looking for short-term replacement

I'm being dropped by my carrier for using too much 'off-net' data and I'm looking for a short-term replacement until a phone I'm waiting for comes out. As I've never had an Android phone before, I seem to be pretty lost at choosing a phone. I want a no-contract phone, and I'm thinking about the Galaxy S II on U.S. Cellular's network (U.S. Cellular and Verizon are the only carriers in my area with 3G, and Verizon only has one option for prepaid smartphones.) I'm wondering if the $400 is worth it, and if there are any other options I haven't found yet. Please reply with your suggestions/opinions!
