My wife and I both acquired a Sprint Hero last week. I was under the impression that the Hero (from Sprint) had Android 1.6 on it, but the Firmware version says 1.5. Does this mean I don't have Android 1.6?

Here are the various About Phone items and their reported versions:

    Model Number: HTC Hero
    Firmware: 1.5
    Baseband: 1.04.01.09.21
    Kernel: 2.6.27-533ce29d
    Build Number 1.56.651.2
    Hardware Revision: 0002

I'm new to this smart phone stuff.

Unfortunately we're all on 1.5 at the moment. 2.1 is coming at some point, but nobody knows the specific date (Although there are plenty of rumours).

You'll need to download the latest update for this. Current build number is 2.73.xxx

You'll notice quite a speed difference.

After looking on here, and looking on HTC's website, I can't find anyplace to update the rom. I'm running build number 1.56.651.2 also.

AHA! Found it in HTC Sync.
    Tools > Check for updates

But after keying in my serial number, it tells me it's not suitable for my phone. Is it because I have a CDMA hero?

I don't know what Sprint do to their phones, but if it's anything like the branded phones here in the UK, you need to download the update from Sprint's website.

I'm in the US. Sprint's website shows the version I have as being the latest one available.

    They're advertising Android 1.6...
