I have rooted my phone and installed the new modaco rom.
    I have an 8gb class 4 sdcard.

    Here are my questions:

Is it wise to put my apps on the sdcard and run it from there even though its only a class 4 and not the 6 everyone says?

Also, with the new rom I find it a bit laggy at times, for example I find I have to hold down the icon longer before I can move it around on the homepage or other pages.

    Any ideas on these?

I have a Class 6, I think the reason behind using these is the speed required to run apps smoothly..

I see this longer hold as a functionality thing, not a lag issue. It ensures you will not accidentaly enter edit mode when moving through screens.

So would you think a class 4 is simply going to be too slow?
I dont have anything on the card at the moment. I havent decided if I'm going to make use of the music player yet.

If all you want an SD card for is Apps2SD then you do not need an 8GB card.
You would struggle to fill a 500MB partition with apps..

I don't know if class 4 is too slow. I would wait for others to appear and offer input ;)

    Darn,

Can't remember where I saw it, but it was being discussed that apps2sd might actually be slowing the phone down, as the android operating sys. shuts down unused apps to free up mem.

    Max.

P.S. I'm running the latest Orange rom with a class 6 and I can't really say there's much difference.

That depends on the card. "Class 4" merely defines the required minimum transfer rate. I suggest trying it anyway; your particular card may be perfectly adequate.

Note that the class of an SD card only refers to the *write* speed - in practice the read speeds are stupidly high regardless of the class of the card. The minimum write speed of the card is the class in MB/sec - so a class 2 card will write a at at least 2 megabytes per second etc, read speeds of many of these cards will typically be in the order of >10MBytes/sec, regardless of class.

So, if youre running an app from a class 4 SD card you probably won't notice any difference from a class 6 card, it's only if the app needs to write data to the card that you'll see any difference, and even then only if it's a LOT of data. Off the top of my head the only thing i can think of that might actually require a class 6 card to work properly is video recording.

Thanks for all the info . I don't have a lot of apps at the moment so I was thinking maybe just putting bigger apps such as the browser and music player on the sd card. Does that apptosd app allow me to pick which apps to move and run from the as card?
Also I assume the music player drains the battey quite fast, so just wondering for those using it would you recommend it or just stick to using another device?
I've never had a phone that could play music similar to an ipod but I thought those would just cause the phone to run slow or destroy the battery faster.

'Fraid not, it's all or nothing.

I find the default player perfectly adequate for playing my MP3 albums (apart from the lack of EQ to compensate for my dodgy left ear!) Power will obviously drain faster than if not using it but it'll easily give me 4hrs playing time over the course of a day, plus a couple of calls and the background data stuff, with charge to spare.
