There is a type of live folder you can add to your home screen called "Starred". Googling around it looks like this means that you can add a 'star' to people in your contact list, and then only those Star-people will show up in that folder, as direct dial contacts.

Except I can't find how to 'star' a contact. I found detailed directions a couple places, but the options don't match up, ("click the greyed out white star by the contact's name and it turns yellow"). There is no star that I can see.

Alternatively, does anyone know how to make the standard People contact default to a specific group (say VIPs?) when opening?

I have a google contact group called "Favorites" that populates the starred folder. Maybe try manually adding this group?

EDIT: On the google contact webpage it shows as "Starred in Android"

"Starred" is a favorite location you save via Google Maps. Maybe that's what the folder is for?
