I like the desire but the only thing that really does my head in is not being able to store many apps [or text messages] due to not being able to store apps on the memory card

I see on here that Android 2.2 allows you to do this and first I need to root my desire

Will rooting my Desire wipe my contacts and already stored apps? Will it also set all my settings [ringtones etc] back to 'factory setting'?

I really fancy being able to store apps on my 16gb card and stop that irritating 'YOU ARE RUNNING OUT OF STORAGE' message

    Welcome to the forum.
Rooting the phone its self shouldn't its the installing the custom roms that wipe the data etc stored on the phone.
There are ways of backing up the stored stuff.
this is the easiest way of rooting.

Thanks. I will look at that once I have decided which 2.2 to install. I have been lurking for a couple of months, but only just reckon I'm ready to converse as a total newbie on all things Android :D
