Hi ive got my desire today and am already frustrated because there's so many things needing to be sorted on it!!!
I've started from scratch with the 7 welcome screens and need to build those up (any tips much appreciated 4 example how to get the wi-fi switch etc etc back)
As for syncing my contacts Facebook has mucked everything up. Any chance i can stop info being taken from facebook and just importing them myself?
Also i set up a google account but had to delete it immedietly (on my pc due to the email address being entered wrong) Now i've set up a new one how the hell do i change it on the phone. My phone still thinks i'm using the one i've deleted!?!?
    HELP MUCH APPRECIATED

Here's a few answers to keep you and your new phone entertained for a while! ;)

Wi-Fi switch - press the + icon at the bottom right of the launcher, select Add Widget, and select Power Control. This widget gives you access to toggles for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, Sync/Update, and screen brightness. You can add other switches from the Market once you get familiar with the phone and set up your new Google account.

Facebook - There's no way sync individual contacts, it's all or nothing. Did you sign in to the facebook Online Directory? (People > Online Directories > Facebook) If you did, then you should be able to untick the FB Directory and it will stop the sync.

Google - not entirely sure about this, but if I were in your position I would do:
Menu > Settings > Accounts & Sync > Google > Remove Account. After this there should be some way to create a new Google account, but I've never done it so I can't give you any further help.

Cheers for the tips, as for the last one it won'tlet me delete the account as it's essential for the use of the phone apparently! But ive got another one set up already for that purpose. Aaaaargh!!!

    OK, how about this:

Menu > Accounts & Sync > Add Account

Add your new Google account, then see if you can remove the faulty acc.

    These are my fave apps:

3G Watchdog - cool app that monitors the data on your talk plan and gives daily, weekly and monthly totals, and tells you how much data you will probably use each month.

Text messages - the stock app is SOOO boring! Try Handcent or ChompSMS, both allow total customization of backgrounds, conversation lists, colours, fonts, etc.

Check out the "Show us your Homescreen" thread on the HTC Desire forum. Its a really big thread but theres a ton of info about apps and widgets.

Calender - CalWidget - excellent widgets in all different sizes, fully customizable, and it sync's with your Google Calander so you can update online or on the phone.

Google Sky Map - personal fave app

AudioManager - adds a widget that gives you direct access and control over all the different sound functions on your phone

Dropbox - create an account, add it to your phone and home PC (I also have it on my laptop at work). Add any file to your dropbox folder on any device and it sends it to the Dropbox folder on all other devices.

WeatherBug - very good weather widget with locations, maps and 7 day forecasts, plus much more. Better than the stock weather widget.

Internal Memory Widget - for keeping track of storage space.

SD Card memory Widget - same as above for your SD card.

Yet another question, i'm transfering my number (meant to go through on monday) and i was told i could use this number untilthen. I seem unable to send messages, make calls and use the internet apart from Wi-fi so is this due to the process of changeing the number being done??? Will everything just activate on Monday? Thanks

Match your phones network settings in Menu -> Settings -> Wireless and networks -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names with the ones supplied by your carrier (googling "[carrier] apn android" should give you the info.)

You should also see which network operator the phone is set to.

Have you had the text messages from Orange with your phone settings? FYI, within 24 hours of inserting your SIM in the phone you should get text messages that you read and delete. The messages set up your message centre, voicemail, internet and email settings, etc.

Your phone communications will be limited until the network settings are updated by Orange.

Aha haven't received this yet but was told i would. Is it a case of reading and deleting, then switchin the phone off and back on again when i receive it!? No need to install anything no? It has been 24 hours since i switched the phone on now though :/

Yeah, the service messages update your SIM settings when you read the message and they can be deleted once opened. The delay could be connected to the number change, but a quick free call to Orange on 150 is worth a try.

What a disaster, having been in to the shop it seems as if i got the wrong phone and someone else is using mine. They can't simply transfer the details and IME numbers of one phone to the other and transfering things on their system due to 'fraud' apparently so i'm having to wait until tuesday now to receive the other one. Totally not happy that i'll b getting a handset someone else has used after i paid to get a brand new one! Apparently my contract is running as i'm waiting aswell. What the hell! Any advice on all this malarky?

Can i use my 28 day exchange policyy with orange to grab a 'new handset' and not one that's been used by this other user? (once they have them in stock ofcourse)

I think the exchange policy only applies to online/phone orders, because you haven't had the chance to inspect the phone in person. I got my Desire from an Orange shop and they said the exchange policy didn't apply, and they made sure I was happy with the phone before I signed the contract.

However, it's not a simple case of changing your mind. It sounds like you didn't get what you signed up for, and you are paying for something that you have not yet received. I don't think it's unreasonable for Orange to sort out the problem AT THEIR EXPENSE, after all it was their mistake. You signed up for a new Desire on a talk plan that started on a certain date, and Orange should do whatever is necessary to ensure this is exactly what you get.

If they can't give you this, then I would think they have not met their obligations under the agreement and the contract is invalid, giving you a way out.

I think it can take upto 24 hours if you're activating a new orange SIM with your existing number and plan.

Usually it should only be a couple though.
