Ok for anyone that knows how it feels to be new, we get lost in the terminology of things.

So whatever simple words you think that the new people should know, just put it here.
    Also please a brief explanation.

    Here are a few :

A2S - application to sd card - apps get installed into the phone memory, so therefore the phone will get full, so we try to find ways to install an app on the sd card and run it from there instead; only a root feature.

Twiz- touchwiz user interface- has three desktops with each having their own wall paper. The cube is also a part of this interface. Claimed to not be updated past 1.6

    Stock rom = twiz

Please add some more info and no negative comments. This is a terminology thread.

Root -Administrator/Superuser mode. Gives you full control over settings on your phone. Gives your access to all files, allowing you to remove bloatware. Needed for some apps, and for A2S/A2SD

Flash - rewrite the software/firmware on your phone using a computer to "flash" or completely rewrite the memory card (ROM) of your phone. This is done using ODIN.

Cupcake-Android version 1.5, what your phone came with.

Donut- Android version 1.6, what TMobile will, supposedly, be updating the phone to OTA

Eclair-Android version 2.1 (Also includes versions 2.0 and 2.0.1, which have been superseded by 2.1). Samsung has said that we will not be receiving this version of android

Froyo (Frozen Yogurt)- Android version 2.2.

OTA- the method T-Mobile, and everyother phone company, uses to update android phones. The new versions of Android are developed by Google and then released to OEM's, Samsung in our case. The OEM then writes drivers that enable the new software to work on the phone's hardware. they also develop any specialized UI (user interface), like Touch Wiz, or other software they want to include. Once this is complete, they turn it over to the cell phone company, Tmobile, who then have to do the final checks to make sure the update works, and then distributes it over there data network using there cell transmitters.

OEM - original Equipment Manufacturer, the people who actually put together electronic hardware. Also refers to any equipment original to the phone, or produced by the company for the phone

    Roms (edited)

There are 3 types of 1.6 roms (stock 1.6, no twiz 1.6, and galaxy)

No twiz roms are named after candies (minus the first release)
Here there are from earliest to latest
    No twiz
    No Twix
    Dots
    Warheads
    Take5
(I will edit if I'm off)

The galaxy roms are labled by "r" followed by a number (ex "r12")
If someone knows all the galaxy roms there are released (just names, because detail are in the all things rooted forum, then please type them in)

    It was

    No-Twiz
    No-Twix
    Dots
    Warheads
    Take5

(Take5 being a joke name because, well... it was the Fifth release ;->

The "Stock" or "Factory" ROM was a pre-pre-release of the new OTA update.

Not just T-Mobile. As I've said before, my brother's recieved "OTA Notifications" on his phone (AT&T) time after time, and I think he's only ever succesfully gotten two of them (And we're talking about over the span of a year)

I don't mind OTA, as when it works, it's very convenient. I mind OTA-*ONLY* because, let's face it: It doesn't work often :p
