For some reason, I can't receive emails while using WiFi, but I can send/receive texts. I tested this by sending emails from my laptop and having my wife send me emails while I was on WiFi. They never arrived in my Gmail app until I turned off WiFi and went back to 3G. Is it supposed to work like this?

I just tried it and it worked fine.

I connected to my WiFi and ran a speedtest to make sure I was getting WiFi speed. Sent an e-mail from Yahoo on my computer to the gmail account linked with my phone and arrived and chimed pretty much immediately. Repeated this with my ActiveSync Exchange server for my work and got the same result.

It's not a problem. It's because Yahoo are (is?) dicks. You are not allowed to access yahoo via pop over wifi unless they explicitly allow it (iPhone/AT&T).

You can if you have their premium service, which allows pop download of mail. Anyway, I don't understand why this works with some people but not others. Is there a reason I wouldn't be able to receive my emails (Gmail app) while on WiFi?

Did you turn off 3G but turn on WiFi? Because here is what I've found.

I wanted to extend battery life while at home and I'd heard that 3G was worse on the battery than WiFi (may or may not be true). So, I toggled off 3G and turned on WiFi. Everything works just fine.

However, after the phone goes to sleep, approx 10 minutes later, WiFi is toggled off by Android (probably to save battery). At that point, you phone is not connected to 3G (you turned it off) and no longer connected to WiFi (it timed out). So, no internet activity until you wake the phone back up. Text messages & phone calls are fine because turning off the 3G does NOT turn off phone calls or text messages.

I tested this by turning off 3G, turning on Wifi, waiting 10 minutes for WiFi to go to sleep, then sending an email from my PC. After an hour of waiting (and not waking up the phone), no email notification arrived.

YMMV, but this is what I've figured out so far.

So are you saying that in order to be able to receive emails while on WiFi, you have to turn 3G off? I thought that when you enabled WiFi, it just "switched" from 3G to WiFi? If this isn't so, then where is the option to turn off 3G?

No. What I'm saying is that IF you turn off 3G and just use WiFi, then it may stop syncing mail after 10 minutes. If 3G remains on, then it should sync just fine. And yes, enabling WiFi will cause the phone to switch, leaving 3G on.

You can turn off 3G by:
#1 - Adding the mobile network widget (located under settings in widgets)
#2 - Selecting 'mobile internet off' after holding down the top power button (same screen that allows you to turn off the phone).

Oh, I didn't turn off 3G, I just switched over to WiFi and my emails never arrived. Strange.

I'm confused then. I don't know why it's not working. I also noticed that apps wouldn't download from the Android Market while I was on WiFi. I had to turn it off before they would download. I don't understand this because I can surf the web just fine while on WiFi.

I want everything on WiFi. It wasn't a problem on my Storm 1 or 2, but I also know that BB is built on email delivery.

I can say that the only problem I've had with wifi is the lack of email delivery... so far, everything else seems to be ok.

Could it be the protocol that the account is set? Mine is set for IMAP and not POP. Maybe it needs to be POP. I do have premium yahoo account with pop.

Is there a way to allow the mobile network to stay on while being on Wifi? Because I'd like to be able to use Skype for instant messaging (which requires Verizon's Mobile Network), but also have the speed of Wifi for internet browsing and such.

I'm not sure about that, but at least now we know there appears to be a bug with receiving emails while on WiFi.

I have been having no issues getting my emails over Wifi, but I use Gmail so I don't know if that has any bearing. I do have some hiccups now and then when the phone automatically switches between the mobile network and wifi with emails, but nothing drastic.

Can someone help me out with these extremely noob questions:

What is the difference between 3g and wifi? Why would you want one over the other? Is wifi always available (like driving on the highway) or is it like you have wifi in your house? But 3g is everywhere?

Yikes I have a lot to learn...
