download the apks or use a barscanner and scan the apks that aren't in the market anymore. you can easily find those floating around the internet. i downloaded music junk awhile back when it wasn't available in the market through some 3rd party web site.

just about all apps are safe, but if you really wanted to be on the safe side you could download one of the many mobile security apps available in the market. they scan to see if any new apps you download are safe or not.
