Non-rooted Messaging

How easy or difficult would it be to get the stock Android messaging app (like on the Nexus One) and modify the apk so that it will install on an UNROOTED Droid Eris? Because if you download the stock messaging apk, it won't install because it is basically named the same thing as my HTC messaging app that comes stock. So if Handcent and all installs as seperate messaging apps, is there a way to make the stock Android messaging different so that it will install? If I can modify the Handcent apk, resign, and install it successfully, shouldn't there be a way to modify the stock Android messaging app and install it without root?

you'd have to find a way to modify the software name, signature and version so that the phone won't recognize it as an app that's already installed.

for rooted users, they could simply flash a rom with the stock app removed, modify the APK and then install it.

the only reason this works with Handcent is because you can uninstall that, modify it, sign it and re-install it. you can't uninstall the stock app :(
