    Morning everyone,

I downloaded and installed NPS with the aim of upgrading the firmware (if its possible) of the Galaxy S.

    I took these steps:
    Download NPS
    * * Installed NPS (Language UK, region UK) (NB. I suspect that this 'phone was destined for the Portuguese market as this was the default language. Perhaps by settings UK in NPS, it won't recognise the 'phone. *I see that once installed one can only change the language and not the country).
    * * NPS launched and gave some pretty windows.*
    * * Plugged in Galaxy S (it is turned on)*
    * * Windows New Hardware Wizard started! EH? *

My O/S WinXP SP3. I presume that NPS did not install any of the drivers for the 'phones. Great. Is there a Samsung site somewhere that I can download the drivers from so that WXP will recognise it?

    Best regards.

Update : I went through the Hardware Wizard, but it did not find the Galaxy S phone. Also, I looked under the drivers for the modem and USB and nowt was there. Perhaps the new Samsung Galaxy S 'phones cannot be upgraded using the NPS?

I rebooted the notebook, and the NPS s/w started on boot, and is set to monitor and open NPS when new devices are connected.

I connected the Galaxy S, and the screen on it wrote: Press Home key to disconnect from Keis. However, the new Hardward Wizard still started on WXP, and the Search Device option in NPS says that there are no devices connected.

NB. I have not installed Samsung Keis. I want to upgrade the firmware first. One thing at a time.

What exactly is NPS? The Galaxy S uses Kies for official firmware upgrades, so it is recommended you it as well.

Kies also installs all the USB drivers, so you should install Kies before NPS, whatever it may be.

NPS is the Samsung New PC Studio. It provides the firmware updates for the Galaxy, while, from what I can make out from the docs, the Kies does the O/S kernel etc. I had supposed that by firmware they meant the SPL but am unsure as I am may well be really really misinformed or jumped to some conclusions.

The notebook is downloading Kies as I type.

I installed Keis. Attached the 'phone. Followed the instructions. Keis does not recognise the Galaxy S.
    Model #: GT-I9000
    2.1-update1
    Baseband version: I9000XXJM1*
    Build # : ECLAIR.XWJM2

Reboot solved thproblem. Seems that the 'phone has the latest upgrade:
    PDA JM2
    PHONE JM1
    SCS JM2

Although the Kies programme crashed after it told me it was at the latest version... MSC.Thunder.FirmwareUpdate has encountered a problem. Very informative :)

Will Froyo 2.2 be released using Kies? I ask because the 'phone was bought SIM free.
    Best regards.

Just noticed that Samsung Apps cannot be used. This is a shame. It tells me that its unavailable in my country. I took the default settings when I installed it (US English). I have changed it to UK English and restarted Kies, but still tells me that Samsung Apps in unavailable. Does this mean its not available in the UK or in the US. Very strange. I would rather leave Kies in English, but I can manage French when pushed, but not a lot of point if Samsung Apps are neither available in a francophone country like Suisse Belgium or France.

Samsung originally made Kies for there own operating system BADA. The apps you see are mainly for there phones running Bada thats why they can't be installed on the Galaxy S which runs android.

This is also the reason why so many people have problems with kies, but according to samsung they are working hard to rectify the problems.
