I followed these instructions after applying the 2.1 OTA update:

    I. Rooting your phone (the easiest part)

    1. Download this file: PB00IMG.zip (md5: 63eacc5ede3b179f95dc22d8ef585f94)

    2. Place PB00IMG.zip onto the root directory of your sdcard.

    3. Power down your phone.

    4. Hold Volume Down + Power On. This should bring you to a screen saying "HBOOT" and some other stuff. Wait for it to load the image, and it will say Push Activate. Push the trackball button to continue. The process will take around 5-10 minutes. The first time your phone boots up it will take a lot longer than normal.

    5. Your phone is now rooted.

After, I thought I confirmed that I had, in fact, gotten root access since I saw a # instead of the $ for the prompt via the SDK tool kit. However, when I try to use an app that requires root, none of the function properly. For example the terminal emulator force closes when I try to start it. Also the wifi tether app fails to start, and seems to just turn off wifi on my phone.

    Run an adb shell command
    then
    su

Look at your phone, see if its asking you for permission. If so, hit "always allow"

Ok so you ARE rooted... is it just those 2 apps? Or ALL apps requesting permission? Download Autokiller, try to set a profile, and see if it asks you for permission. If so, hit "ALWAYS ALLOW". let me know...

Ok, I've replaced the driver .nif, deleted and reinstalled the USB driver, as per your link trishuhh; but I still get the # sign at adb shell with out putting in su, and when I do enter su, no allow / deny screen pops up on my phone

LexusBrian400, I downloaded that app and it allowed me to make changes - I'm not sure what you mean by profile, I'm assuming you mean a preset? Then yes, it allowed me to apply a preset. Another app - ad free, works as it should, removing the built in ad banners from other apps. So far the terminal emulator will not work, and wifi tethering. Also, I am unable to connect to localhost via the telnet app.

Did you try what I told you yet? If you're getting the "#" sign, I'm failing to see what the problem is. Once again

    Download Autokiller
    Set a profile
If it asks you for permission, Hit "Always Allow"

Just do it to test it. let me know what happens.

Screw the terminal emu. You have a command prompt for adb right? Use that. As far as wifi tethering, stop using the one you are trying to and use Anetshare.

Ok, I found a new terminal app that doesn't crash, and I can su in that fine, so I do appear to be rooted correctly....I'll try out this anetshare thing now...

It MAY appear not to work at first. But just give it time to find your computer. Once it does, check the checkbox next your computer name and IP address. That is what finally allows it to tether. Sometimes it will seem like its not working, but it may just take a few minutes, just let it do its thing. Best wireless tethering out there IMO.

    Quick question,

Did you install the recovery image and a new rom or are you using the original root rom?

I didn't bother installing a recovery image, I didn't see the need. I didn't flash any custom rom, either. I simply let the OTA 2.1 update install, then used the PB00IMG.zip to get root access.

The you dont have the OTA, that file over writes it with the oldest root image available. You have to do recovery, then a custom rom of some kind, or expect lots of issues.
