First things first. Try taking the battery out and trying again to boot it after a couple of minutes wait. Seeing how I can't see this working (although possible) can your get into download mode (battery out, back in press volume down and hold home key and hold finally power and hold) hopefully you'll get a warning about installing a custom OS. If so your phone isn't dead and we can go from there.

What model is your Note 3? If you can't remember it'll be on the box or under battery on a sticker. This will help us help you.

    Hi

    Thanks for your help

Taking the battery out did not help but it did boot to the installing custom OS as you said it may do

    The model is SM- N9005

Excellent, your phone can be saved. Now having tried to root it you will know what firmware you were on, either 4.3 or 4.4.2. Also is your Note 3 carrier (network) branded?

For now pull the battery again to save power and get back to me and I'll download your firmware for you, and stick it into my public drop box for you along with a copy of Odin, although if you tried to root it you should have a working copy of Odin anyway. What you need to do is do an Odin flash of your firmware. This will get you up and running again. Then if you want we can discuss rooting it. Let's get it working first.

apologies - I forgot to say the phone is contracted to o2 but I don't think it is branded.
I got it from the Car Phone Warehouse

    thanks

Phil I'm presuming you tried to root the brand new 4.4.2 UK firmware as you say it was 4.4.2 and your phone came from CPW. The only 4.4.2 with O2 branding is German. So that can't be it. It really makes no difference, your phone will have the latest 4.4.2 with the UK (BTU) firmware once done.

Right I'll upload it to my Dropbox for you. You could download it yourself from SamMobile but I have a premium account there for the fast downloads. So It'll be quicker for me to download it and then upload it to Dropbox. I'll give a link to it when done, and explain what to do.

    Hi

the phone came with Ver 4.3, I updated to 4.4.2 this morning via Kies

Then I tried to root with Odin - the root started ok then the status bar went to fail

I had no problem rooting my S2 or S3 previously

Then this is the right one. You seem to know what your up to with all this so here are the Odin instructions, short version.

    Extract (unzip) the firmware file
    Download Odin v3.09
    Extract Odin zip-file
    Open Odin v3.09
Reboot phone in Download Mode (press and hold Home + Power + Volume Down buttons)
Ignore the warning and press volume up.
Connect phone and wait until you get a blue sign in Odin
Add the firmware file to AP (tick box and click on to browse to the .tar.md5 file you extracted to your desktop)
Make sure re-partition is NOT ticked
Click the start button, phone should reboot automatically on finish and be like new out of the box.
