Is there an app that allows you to pull the notification bar down from the lock screen? I mean this would be nice and when you touched the text from the notification bar, it took you to your text messaging app without haveing to swipe down the lock screen slide.

You can remove the swipe using no lock and then you would see the notification bar and wouldn't have to unlock.

but then, if you bump the on/off button in your pocket, you have no protection from butt dialing, and as most of us know, butt dialing can be very bad..

Unless your naked (thus not having a pocket to start with) the screen won't recognize the pressure to dial.

not necessarily. If you happen to leave your dial screen up, then you could hit the optical mouse and eventually navigate your way through the dialing process.

sorry, I have the Incredible which has an optical joystick which also functions as a "select" button when pushed. Didn't notice this was posted in the EVO forums.
