Walked in and just said i was looking for Hero accessories. The store manager started talking with me so I tried to dig for info. She said she doesn't (supposedly) know anything about pricing or firm availability, and also doesn't know anything about the April 16th marketing thing that many of us believe will happen. None of that is shocking, even if she did know something I wouldn't expect her to tell someone from off the street. She just said she doesn't believe anything that doesn't come from HQ, especially not the intertrons.

I expressed my concern that I was currently in a gap of 4G in Houston and asked if they would continue building out or just move on. She said they'd definitely continue expanding coverage over the market and especially in the particular area of town I'm in (dense population, affluent area). So that's good, but I take it with a grain of salt.

I then asked to see a demo of the 4G speeds on their laptop with wifi. Honestly wasn't really impressed. I pulled up the HD youtube preview of '2012' and while the stream only needed to be buffered once, I was sort of hoping for more lightning quick downloading. I think its because their whole store runs on that one 4G connection or something and that will bring the speed down. Another employee came up and told me that they have a 4G tower actually on top of their store and that the main MIFI device was currently getting 3.5 GIGAHERTZ PER SECOND of download speed, and that with a 4G connection I should expect somewhere between 70-80 mb/s speeds...uhhh what?

I had my Hero on me of course, so I asked if I could get on their network and check it out so he gave me the password. This is where it gets interesting. I have an app called 'Speed Test' that does ping, DL and UL speeds. Heres the results:

    On the 4G Demo network:
Wifi 4G Ping (ms) DL (kbps) UL (kbps)
    1 1611 413 725
    2 1148 468 654
    3 1001 616 615
    AVG 1253 499 665

    Walked outside and tested 3G...
3G Ping (ms) DL (kbps) UL (kbps)
    1 231 320 550

Walked into Bestbuy to play with the iPad and they had wifi so...
Bestbuy Ping (ms) DL (kbps) UL (kbps)
    1 94 5255 879
    2 83 5702 675
    3 97 2218 826
    AVG 91 4392 793

    How do you interpret this?

I also asked for clarification on the premiere thing. I'm not the premiere line on my family plan, so she said I could call and likely have it switched to my line. The only difference it makes is the 1 year upgradability and also 25% accessories. I got Hero on 10/2009 so right now I'm upgradable on 10/2011. If I get premiere, I'll be able to upgrade on 10/2010. I was wondering whether since when the premiere line on my plan DID upgrade on 01/2010, whether I would have to wait till 01/2011 but thats not the case.

So basically after doing this and buying EVO out of the box, by the time next summer rolls around and hopefully EVO2 etc, I'll be sitting on an upgrade option :D

I have Clear Wimax (same thing) and I get 3-5 mbps down for the most part. Sometimes I hit 6 or 7. A wifi connection channeling Best Buy's corporate broadband may be faster than a typical over the air Wimax connection.

Wimax is still limited by signal strength, hardware, software, etc. but going from EVDO (3G) at around 800kbps to Wimax (4G) at 3000-5000kbps is a big jump. No idea what their Wimax signal was like in that building but that's a pretty average reading for a speed test at my house on Wimax.

Cabbie, I'm in the same situation living in houston, but in a bit of a hole in 3g coverage area. I'll be considering getting the evo later this year.
I have a question regarding the 4g network test you did at Sprint. If you have a 3G phone, how were you able to test their 4g network?

They claim DL speads up to 10 Mps but say the average is 3-6 and for download up to 1 Mps is what they claim. I can say with few exceptions, my home Clear numbers have matched this exactly. Not the Fastest internet available, but still better than my 3 Mps Att Uverse numbers I was getting. If my phone happens to get me numbers anywhere near this, life would be great!

That was pretty much the same as when I asked a representative to test 4G speed, here in Stafford (SW of Houston). One thing I noticed is that the UL speeds was higher than the DL speeds, which to me is kind of odd. But the ping is much better from where I tested it than what you have. More than a second ping is unacceptable in my opinion.

BTW, GHz is a measure of frequency, not bandwidth. :)

I think the sprint towers are probably a bit over used. They probably have tons of mifis plus the store running all on the samebandwidth.
