Odditie on top of screen

I have the behold and i am using it on att network. WHile edge is all i normally get and see an e on top of the screen whenever i go to a no service zone here in the hospital the E changes to a G. Wat is this G? I havent had time to play with it when it says G but i will soon.Stock phone cept it is unlocked and on ATT now and i tweaked the cdma freq a little bit. Any help on what the G means would be appreciated.

"G" is a lower version of "3G" it is about the same speed as edge "E"

G stands for GPRS, or "1G" I suppose.
