It's what we're all waiting for, bro.

I have no offline alternative to suggest sadly, as of yet, but the up-side is that Google Navigation *is* still in Beta, and there was a quote from a Google engineer that said they were "very, very aware" that people want the navigation to function offline...

I know that's not very helpful to you in the short-term, but it's a glimmer of hope, if nothing else...

Goto the Market and search for CoPilot. Note, CoPilot is not available in all regions/countries. If you can't find it, then checkout Market Enabler. Costs around

I HAVE SIGNED JUST TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION FOR YOU XD

I spent ages going through them all, and THE BEST is orux maps...
trust me DONT TRY ANYTHING ELSE.
It is the best bar none and is completely free.. you use trekbuddy atlas creator to create orux map files and them you put these files into the correct folder on your SD card, you can then load GPX KMZ KML files for routes and track your own as you go along...
you can use google maps files aswell as many other open source maps.

here is the atlas creator: Mobile Atlas Creator | Download Mobile Atlas Creator software for free at SourceForge.net
    here is otux maps: OruxMaps
and here is quick tutorial to putting maps on your device: http://www.oruxmaps.com/oruxmapsdesktop_quick.pdf

Please tell me how you get on,

    hope this helps
    xD
