A topic that has already been discussed at length, I have only one question that I could not find from a quick search (so forgive me if I missed it, I did try!)

My phone has begun the dreaded random rebooting. There are a few recent applications that I still need to try removing (GDE, I hope its not that... I love it :(), however I have a reeling a return is in order. BUT FIRST, A QUESTION: Has anyone had their rebooting problem solved by a hard reset of the phone??? I don't want to return to Verizon, redo Phantom Skinz, etc. etc. if all I had to do was reboot it and reinstall apps.

One thing you might try before Factory Reset is ...

1.) From your home screen .... Pull the Battery .. (yes with power on)

2.) Pull battery and Wait 3 to 5 minutes ...

3.) Reinstall battery and reboot phone ....

This may or may not clear the issue ... but worth a try before doing a Factory Reset ....

And just to add... pull the battery cover with the phone on.

Push with a little force, but controlled, try to push the battery away from the contacts, maybe try the force in diagonal directions. If it goes off, it's a contact problem.

I think you are on the right track with some software. IMHO, Marketplace should have enforced a "we have tested this on 2.0" by the developers. I can understand their marketing though, there would be hardly any apps in Marketplace.

My first droid did the random reboot before I ever had a chance to do much of anything with it. Take it back, do you really want to dick around with a phone that doesn't work properly. I'm sure since the phone is 2-3 weeks old you can still get it replaced with almost no questions asked. Make sure you take a printout of the thread talking about random reboot problems so they believe you when you tell them you are not the only person having a problem, just in case like my phone, it decides to work fine once it gets there. Took the tech about 15 minutes of playing with the phone before it finally locked for him.

mmm k, tried to get the battery to break contact, but couldnt, its in there tight.

took out the battery for 10 minutes.

Just watched it reset randomly while sitting on my desk in the charging dock.

Demonstrating the resets to Verizon will be nearly impossible, as it only ~seems~ to be doing it 3-4 times a day.

I suppose that means I will HAVE to hard reset the phone before Verizon will exchange it. I can see how that conversation would go....

tech: so you have a problem with your phone
    me: yes, it randomly resets
    tech: can you demonstrate it?
    me: no.....
tech: have you wiped your phone clearn and ruled out an application gone rogue?
    me: no.....
    tech: .........................
me: right then... ok, i'll try that and come back if it doesnt fix i :(

Blarg... I don't wantt o reload all my apps TWICE (certified app-o-holic, with WAY too much chit)

Is it possible that one of your apps is causing the behaviour? There's been some screwy apps reported here already!

It ABSOLUTELY is, and I'm in the process of systematically testing that very thing. Only problem is the behavior is random enough that it takes a whole day to know if its behaving well or not...

most recent additions are GDE and Screebl.

As far as the App reload goes, it is a piece of cake. I exchanged mine last week and was surprised that within 10 minutes of activation, all my apps had downloaded and installed automagically.

So if an app is to blame, and someone exchanges, the problem gets automagically installed again?

You'll see people exchanging 2-3 times and reporting the same issue, but some will never report the software they have installed. If everyone did that, we might see some interesting trends :)

Well, if you uninstall an app before the exchange, it will not reappear.

    Answer:

I suspect you know what I'm saying here, so I'm not chasing my tail on this point anymore. Apps you have installed will return, for better or for worse.

You are quoting me with no basis and interrupting my discussion in trying to help the OP? Other than that, I have no idea what you are trying to state. It's probably because you have not stated anything specific.

    Are you understanding?

Wait, let me try. You say that people uninstall apps before exhanging, but you are saying they will return, "for better or for worse". So even uninstalled apps, will be re-installed after an exhange/wipe of the phone? I'm not liking what you are saying, this could be a MAJOR flaw!

Do you have the mototorch widget on your home screen? I experienced my one and only reboot right after I added this widget. I also had a number of other issues after adding this. I removed the widget (still have the app) and everything appears to be running ok.

Nope - only used it for a few minutes as a widget, and found I prefered an app. Since I don't use my camera that much, and usually when you want a light, you want it NOW, I reassigned the camera button to launch the light app.

So I take it that the automagical app reload ALSO happens if you hard reset the device?

He's saying that the average consumer is going to download an app, the phone is going to break, and he'll return the phone not knowing its the app. Then the app will reinstall itself because the person didn't know enough to uninstall the app.

    Bingo!

Average consumer is unable or unwilling to perform basic debugging logic (generally unable).

OK, so I think this will be the plan of action, LMK what you think!:

    1) I am an app-o-holic, and have too much shit on the phone, which is causing it to run a little slower. First priority will be to write down everything I use (I don't trust automagical things 100%) and then uninstall everything else.

    2) see if rebooting is fixed. (hard to tell however.. has not reboot once today, and I have not changed anything since the last reboot)

    3) Uninstall any "suspect" apps that remain

    4) hard reset the phone. watch "core" applications hopefully reload automagically.

    5) run as-as for a few days, ensure there are NO problems

    6) one by one, install remaining "suspect" apps that I still really would prefer to use.

    7) IF everything works, keep phone. IF anything so much as looks at me crosseyed, play the better safe than sorry game and get a new one.
