With the help of Sibere of XDA forums....

Basically, this is called Data2SD. Your entire data partition is moved over to a FAT32 partition on your SD card.

I won't lie, it's not easy. If you read the thread, you will see me returning for help a fair few times :)

[DATA2SD] More space and more I/O for your Desire - xda-developers

Essentially it gives you more space as internal memory and as the SD card is faster than the built in NAND that data sits on normally, I/O speeds are increased also.

That score of mine, yes @1152MHz but normally clocks in at 1950-2000 Quadrant. My SD card is only class 4. I've seen scores in excess of 2800.

I'd shudder to think what a class 10 card with Vork Kernel on Defrost will do (*updates Christmas list*).

I wonder how much real world performance this will mean? I shall keep an eye on it

I read this too, these are insane results. I'm not quite comfortable to try this yet but I'd be curious about any additional mods and the impact on battery life and app performance... if any...

There wouldnt be any impact in battery but app performance should improve

Quite complicated steps in that tutorial. If you asked for help, I'd hate to see how many times I'd be asking questions...maybe I'll man up and give it a go when 512mb isn't enough. lol

Yeah. I'm a windows boy so I don't really understand the Linux commands so if they're incomplete, I struggle.

Due to a dodgy partition, I have done this process so many times, that I actually have a good idea on this one now

That's impressive, but is the speed and storage increase something that the average user would see benefit from?

Well 1GB storage, is say yes. It's a bit of a faff though. But you can do it on a rooted stock Rom

I had a2sd+ and a custom partition layout before but they've both gone now.

Apparently you can get lag spikes but not really had any. It takes a bit longer to ne useable from boot but I've only a class 4 card.

The performance is only really I/O but app install seems quicker but maybe that's placebo affect.

It's still being experimented and tested so for the average desire user, modding through necessity rather than for the sheer hell of it, id say there are easier proven methods.

    That said I'm loving it

What happens when a Sd-Card is unmounted/connected to PC over USB? Does it crash the OS?

from looking at the script it shouldnt do as it creates a massive ext file within the second partition
the phone can only see the 1st fat32 partition as sdcard

Hmm..Actually this seems to be the most straightforward approach. I had often wondered why the /data partition cant just be moved to any place just like we do during a linux install. Finally someone has done just that! Cool..

I did have worrying experience yesterday. I rbooted and got a boot loop. after each loop it loaded android and said my uids were inconsistent and if I didn't wipe it would be unusable.

I nandroid restored and all was fine.

I bought audio manager pro but had free version too so wonder if that was the cause...

    Dan,
I think this is a kind of revolution for the Desire, maybe the biggest since it was rooted!

I know how easier you make advanced things..
So here's an idea..Could you port it to Windows, with easier explanations and DOS commands or Windows based actions for what they've described. I'm trying, but since my phone isnt with me, I'm having problems.. :)

It'd be a great post here at Androidforums

I was thinking that but sibere is updating his guide regularly.

I read through the commands where you got problems with..Have they updated the guide since then? Is it a straightforward dive?

Cant wait to have my hands on this..Yummy!

O only used the op. He has updated it since my issues. I'll just have a quick read through...

Edit> looks right. Read the entire thread though because if you get a permission denied when executing a busy.box command, you need to precede it with chmod 777 /system/xbin:busybox

I was adamant that I wasn't going to root until the warranty was up but recently I've got so hacked off with the limited space I finally made the decision to go for a A2SD ROM/Mod as soon as I had time to sit and read through everything thoroughly. Now this seems even better.

Is it likely that this Data2SD will be incorporated into ROMs such as LeeDroid just like A2SD is now? Is so, I'm guessing it'll become a simpler process so it might be worth me holding off for a bit and go directly from stock to Desire nirvāna :)

Ive been asking questions in the original thread. Apparently once we do the process once, you can just substitute a couple of files in your next rom before flashing it.

There was talk of it being implemented in roms but its still in its infancy so not for a while if it is.

For now, I would probably recommend going the a2sd+ route, until you're a bit more familiar with being rooted, custom roms, mods etc.

I am definitely going for this one! :D
A2SD+ looks like a baby, and Partition table hacks kids, compared to this one..Irked me so much that the Samsung Galaxy had much more Internal space than the Desire.. Now we're back.. :)

we now have better io aswell even if they have lagfix
    kaprawned

    EDIT:
the only thing i would really be concerned about is the life of the sdcard. this will speed up its eventual demise due to all the cache being used here aswell
