Even though I am coming from 7.4, I can still use the update.zip if I dont mind wiping my data afterwords, correct? Or must I do the nandroid back up?

The way it reads is a little confusing, dont want to brick my phone.

    Thanks for any help.

7.4 is a 2.0.1-based ROM. 0.4 is a 2.1-based ROM. I'm pretty sure that you would have to download and install Nandroid Backup file. In other words ... a full data wipe would be necessary. Sorry.

Use nandroid, but obviously do a backup first. You can use Titanium Backup if you want, see if that works, or you can risk restoring the /data partition with nandroid after you install the new ROM, but chances are this will cause problems.

This is how I restored all my apps from my previous 2.0.1 ROM (DroidMod) going to Pete's 2.1 BB:

    In 2.0.1:

    cp /data/app/* /sdcard/app

    In 2.1:

    cp /sdcard/app/* /data/app
    sync

    Easy as pie.

And you're able to keep getting updates from the Market after you do it like this?
