Ok heres my issue. 4.2 has been out for a while now and i still havent had a chance to play with it. thats bugging me. im on CM10 (4.1.2) and i have ALOT of data on my N7 and dont want to go thru the trouble of backups redownloading of apps rerooting and everything associated with flashing a new rom.

should i wait till CM releases CM10.1 or should i flash over an AOSP or go to stock and update? im having some issuse having a Nexus with an outdated (i say that like its froyo hahaha :)) OS

If you're already rooted, there wouldn't be a need to unroot it then reroot; you can just flash a 4.2 ROM. As for losing data, that's what tibu is for :D!

my issue is that im on CM. i cant flash an AOSP over CM and keep data right? and for TiBu, i just dont want the hassle. im lazy (lol)

You can technically flash a CM based ROM over another (different) CM based ROM and get away with it with just wiping caches (not recommended btw), but since you'd be making the jump from 4.1.2 to 4.2, a FULL wipe is required; whether you decide to stay on CM and wait for 10.1, or jump to another ROM.

As for tibu, it can't be *that* much of a hassle, can it??? You can even create a flashable zip will all your apps with tibu now.

    Titanium batch backup/restore.

If you dont have the pro version, you should. It even has the ability to make a flashable zip of all of your apps and their data. Then you just flash it from recovery after you flash a ROM

i didnt know they did flashable zips now! this would make it a three step process. flash rom and then flash gapps then apps. would i have to boot into the rom first before i flash the tibu zip? this might be the answer im looking for!

it wont just be like the nightlies i flash now? it will definitely require a full wipe when CM10.1 comes out?

Anytime there are significant changes in the framework of a ROM, a FULL wipe is usually necessary.

You can always try just a dalvik + cache wipe. But if it doesnt work you know what the issue was.

    Just have a nandroid handy

ok a couple of more questions. can i restore my 4.1.2 nandroid if i go up to 4.2.1? i read somewhere that i couldnt. if i can could i flash a 4.1.2 rom (like cm) and then restore my nandroid? should i go stock then root (im assuming i can use the nexus toolkit with 4.2.1) or should i just wipe data and flash an aosp rom thats already rooted? thanks everyone!

You can restore any nandroid you please. :D It doesnt matter what android version it is.

You can flash a 4.2 or 4.2.1 ROM, and if you dont like it, nandroid back to your CM 4.1.2 ROM

I'm on the stock rooted 4.2.1 ROM, so I'm not sure how bug-free the custom ones are yet. I know paranoidandroid was having issues

FWIW, I prefer Rom Toolbox, but that is just me, and as they mentioned, if your going to upgrade to 4.2, it is required to do a full wipe or FR. Nandroid is your best friend, so you can always revert back with no issues ;)

i cant find a pure stock rom :( i found the aosp+ rom here in ATR but was kinda hoping to go completely back to stock. i thought i could do this in the nexus toolkit (i have the command prompt version with green text not the gui) but i dont see the option to go back to stock. im performing a nandroid now which im pretty sure will fail because i have under a gig of free space (whoops lol) so once that fails im gonna create one after i boot back in and delete about 10 gigs of games :) and im gonna try a nandroid again. can i safely stop the creation of a nandroid?

EDIT i just found the option to download and flash googles stock rom! :)

ive been over to xda but i kinda want a pure stock rom that i can root myself with the toolkit. i wish cm would hurry up with 10.1! lol

Yeah, restoring the factory image should do a complete wipe of everything. If not, its still a good idea to back it all up.

WHY CANT I JUST MOUNT THIS AS A USB DEVICE!!!?!?!?!??! have you ever tryed to transfer 10gigs of what im pretty sure are single block files over otg? i got my clockworkmod folder transfered over to my ubuntu pc (over the air via es and shared folders) and backed up the essentials over otg. i was going to do a full backup but i got impatient and canceled it!

    Rxpert83 Dr. Feelgood Moderator

It'll update you to 4.2 then you'll have to update again to 4.2.1

The main differences are the multiple user accounts an you now have 2 different pull downs instead of 1 notification pulldown.

Plus the android 4.2 google apps (swype kerboard, pinch to zoom gmail, ect)
