Hey kids, has anyone successfully rooted their Orange-branded Hero? I'm getting sick of waiting for the 2.1 update and apparently debranded results in a lovely locked SIM so this might be the only way...

Cheers for that, so yours actually works with a rooted ROM, making calls, texting, getting online, etc... and all that jazz with no problems since rooting? That's my big concern - I live on this damn phone and can't afford to be without it. :D

I'm sure this is a thick question, but why so many custom ROM's and what's different between them?

Yup, works a charm. Even gets a GPS signal! No idea why so many, I suppose there are that many people or groups who can create a rom, so do! If I could create roms I probably would add to that bunch!

MInes Orange branded and Rooted, Orange is one of the easier carriers to root, as no goldcard is required,

    1) Roll back to an old firmware

    2) Run Instaroot

    3) Back up recovery image

    4) Use flashrec to flash the new recovery image

    5) use recovery image to flash a new ROM

Bish Bosh, you now have 2.1 and terrible battery life, but its all worth it

All you have to watch out for is that, for at least some Orange branded handsets, not all radios are compatible. I believe the Taiwanese radio, the first one we got our hands on, was like that.

It's easily fixed if one gives you problems though :)
