I've read a few threads regarding this issue but have not yet been able to find a solution.

My primary question is: Are there different types of Micro USB cabes (i.e. charge only vs. data)? My original HTC cable was chewed to pieces by the family pet and I have since replaced it with what was advertised as a "data cable" that I purchased on eBay.

I have once successfully been able to get my PC (running Vista) to recognize my Evo as a disk drive but I can't remember if it was using the original cable or the replacement.

With the replacement, when I connect the phone to my PC, my PC makes the usual sound that it does when something has been plugged into a USB port. The curser spins for a split second as if it's doing something but nothing happens and I do not get the usual dialogue box.

I do not use HTC Sync.
I have already set the default connection type on the phone to "Disk Drive."
I do not get any icon in the phone's notification bar that I can tap on.

If someone knows the answer to the cable question, that will at least give me a place to start :)

    Thanks!

After your phone is connected to the computer, go into my computer or computer depending on PC OS. You will see all your hard drives listed. You should see one that says Removable Disk. This is the SD card that you have connected to. You are then able to browse through there and see all the files on the SD card only. When you have the phone in drive mode this is what you will be able to do. Then you can copy files like music and images to the SD card.

Its possible that you set a default action in the OS to not do anything when you connect the phone. So if you are able to see the drive then it is working. Now if you do not see it then maybe the cable you are using will not work. Some are charge only and don't offer data transfers.

Thanks for the reply. So there is definitely such a thing as a charge only cable? I think that's the problem.

I had already taken a look at all the drives and I have six or seven that say "Removable Disk" but none of them were connected to the phone (clicking on each one resulted in a prompt to "insert a disk").

    Thanks again!

Hmmmm and this is the only cable you can try? Did you try maybe a different USB port?

And Yes there are charge only cables out there.....

Yes, it's the only cable I have. The other, chewed on by a cat, has only two of the four internal wires still intact. That one is still able to charge, but when I plug it into the computer, I don't even get the sound notification that something has been plugged into a USB port.

I did try different USB ports, both on the front and back of the computer (another thread suggested that though I don't see why it would make a difference, assuming the port is not faulty). Other peripherals plugged into those ports are recognized and function so I don't think it's a port issue.

I just tried plugging the phone into my laptop and get almost the same result (laptop is Win XP Home, desktop is Vista). On the laptop, I do see a "Mobile Device" icon in the file manager but unlike the other drives, I can't expand it to see folders or files.

I've emailed the eBay seller to see if I might have been sent a charge-only cable in error.

    Thanks again!

we can't assume they aren't faulty....every computer I own has at least one faulty usb port.

Do you have any local electronics store or sprint store? the right cable is not expensive.

I tried multiple USB ports with other peripherals and since the PC had no trouble recognizing those items, I ruled out faulty ports as a reason for my Evo issue.

I do have plenty of electronics store and even a Sprint store about a mile from me but before I buy another piece of plastic, I really want to make sure that the problem is the cable and not somehting else (i.e. user error).

Sprint lists their Micro USB data cable at $19.99 which seems excessive to me. And frankly, I'm a little unhappy with them right now so I don't want to give them more money than I have to. Paying $10/month for 4G when it doesn't even exist in the SF Bay Area yet is irritating :(

    Thanks for the suggestions!

you would be surprised how many times i have taken a shredded or faulty cable in to their repair desk and said hey..can you help me out I just need a cable...and they just handed me one.

the 19.99 is the cable and plug.

my only thought is that this would immediately tell you it is the cable you are using.

have another computer to try it on? buddies computer?

I'm glad they have been so decent to you, that's great :) I did try on both my desktop and laptop but I just did what is probably what most people try first and it worked. I removed and replaced the Evo battery, et voila! So darn simple and it only took me two days to do it, argh.

    Thanks again!
